    Interesting article on Bobbie Gentry

This study of her influence is published in Rolling Stone

Bobbie Gentry: 'Ode to Billie Joe' Singer's Secret Life - Rolling Stone

I'm pleased that they mention that she was the first woman to host a music/variety show (from any genre) on BBC television. I would put her right at the top in promoting interest in modern Country Music among a general audience here ("Ode" and "Fancy" made as much mark as almost anything by Johnny Cash, for example - and Bobbie sung a variety of moods in her weekly episodes, from sophisticated-sexy to spirited fun songs.)

"Ode" was a masterpiece of partial detail, never fully explained, matter-of-fact, we-mind-our-own-business-but-that-doesn't-stop-us-talking-among-ourselves Southern Gothic. What the article doesn't mention (though several reviewers did) is that Carrie's "Choctaw County Affair" was directly inspired by that tradition, and captures some of the same mood. It was a brave choice by Carrie, very different for her (and probably for many of her fans - though the reaction of most of them was very positive). It not only showed a long view of the genre's traditions, and caught elements of the recent trend, by some artists, to show more Roots influence in Mainstream Country, it also inspired Carrie to take lessons from East Nashville rebel, Travis Meadows, in playing mouth harp credibly in performance. Yet, the sad thing is, that song seems destined to sink below the radar as an album gem for fans, ignored by much of the chart- and showcase-fixated music establishment - probably for the very reason that it is untypical of the unfair one-dimensional image they've built around Carrie, as a Music Row conformist.

Sad when you think about it.... So much about Carrie that goes unnoticed (or totally ignored) by the industry. Carrie is a perfectionist at everything she does and her song-writing is so definitely worth more that what the critics lack to give her merit for......
