    Jean Shepard, RIP

One of the great Country singers, especially noted for her songs in the Honky Tonk tradition, has passed away at the age of 82. She had suffered from Parkinson's disease.

Jean Shepard was born in Oklahoma, but, like many in the Dust Bowl era, spent much of her early years in California, in the Bakersfield era. Ms Shepard was to know other sorrows: her first husband, Hawkshaw Hawkins, was killed in the same plane crash that took the life of Patsy Cline, and she gave birth to their son within a month of that bereavement.

Jean Shepard is regarded as one of the artists who broke down the doors for female performers in the genre. Her duet "Dear John" became the first million seller involving a female performer in the modern era (since Patsy Montana in the 1930s). In later life she continued to tour, especially in the UK, where her traditional Country stylings had a dedicated following. At home, she was best known for her membership of the Opry, which spanned 60 years - the longest of any female performer. Since the recent death of Dr Ralph Stanley, she was the show's oldest member. She was a staunch defender of the music's roots. She said that she was proud when people called her a Hillbilly (Carrie, the Opry's youngest member, recently echoed that sentiment, when discussing her off duty time with her husband). Jean responded strongly to Blake Shelton's "old farts and jackasses" remark, saying "his initials is BS…and he’s full of it!"

She will be missed. Condolences to her family and friends. May she rest in peace.

Thanks Faraway. I listened to the song you put up...and Dear John, with her partner. I bet she was a humdinger as a young woman! She had a cute personality! RIP, Jean Shepard
