Fantasia Barrino - new crossover song

Fantasia, a former American Idol winner, and a member of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, is releasing a Country crossover song

The song is written by Nicole Galyon ("Automatic") and Audra Mae ("Little Red Wagon"). These are the lyrics:

    "[Verse 1]
Couldn't have been but a hundred pounds soakin' wet
    All stressed out and worried
    Podunk, Missouri
And I don't know how or why or when her daddy left
But he drove off in a fury
She grew up in a hurry
    Now skinny jeans and Maybelline
Make pretty girls do crazy things
    Teenage tears and bathroom mirrors
Will stick with you throughout your years

    [Verse 2]
Picket fence, two car garage and a man that she don't love
    But he makes six figures
And she thought he'd fix her
But that iron gate feels more and more like an old bird cage
Than a way to keep out the danger …..So she takes to liquor
All the champagne brunches and upper class shine
    Can't keep a woman satisfied
Swimming pools and bow and braids
And the baby thinks mama's the live in maid
If you as me, I think it's ugly, (so….)

    [Chorus]
Gimme a rusty old rain silo
Gimme good food that sticks to my bones
Thank you for that good good man who loves me
With dirt on my hands and scrapes on my knees
The feeling at night when I wash it all clean
I'm telling ya girls, its a beautiful thing
Trust me, it's far from ugly

    [Bridge]
Eighteen wheels and an open road
I sing my songs all across the country
    Cause these people trust me

    [Chorus]
    So give me
Gimme a rusty old rain silo
Gimme good food that sticks to my bones
Thank you for that good good man who loves me
With dirt on my hands and scrapes on my knees
The feeling at night when i wash it all clean
I'm telling ya girls, its a beautiful thing
Trust me, it's far from ugly"

(Perez Hilton describes the song as "exquisite", but I don't know how her fans from the Idol days will react.

Crossover forays don't always get approval on this board either - but, to my mind, it's stronger than much of the material that gets airplay in the Mainstream, and I like the theme, and the way she matches her vocal to the lyric.)

To be honest, I do not like Fantasia's voice -- to me, I like Jennifer Hudson voice better.

If she passes a couple of the tailgate party boys on the way out, I think we might get the best of the deal.

(Sadly, I'd be inclined to say the same about The Band Perry's not so mellow yellow experiments too - but I'm still hoping they might turn back before it's too late)

I can't stress just how much I dislike hearing this woman sing. It is nails on a chalkboard to me

So is Fantasia shifting to country genre, or is this a one-time thing?

At the moment, it feels as if it's a one-off thing. She posted something about it being a little Country, and all good music is worth exploring.

I don't know much about her, but I do like this. I know not all would agree, but on this showing, I prefer what she's done here to (let's say) Kelly Clarkson or Cassadee Pope (no offence to them - I'd wish them well - but I prefer the character of vulnerability, and ultimate release, in Fantasia's voice)

I was never crazy about her singing either. Do you think country radio is going to play her? Can we expect her to show up at the CMA's or CMT's now?
