    Merle Haggard dead at 79

Country music legend Merle Haggard has died after battling double pneumonia ... according to his manager.

Haggard was diagnosed with pneumonia last year and spent 11 days at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage early this year. He died at home near Redding, CA on Wednesday morning.

He'd been battling back from the illness and even scheduled a string of concert dates with his pal Willie Nelson. They released an album, "Django and Jimmie" last year.

But last week Haggard canceled his shows for the month of April due to his continuing efforts to recover. His manager tells us Merle was weary from battling pneumonia for so long ... and had even predicted to friends he would die on his birthday.

He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.

    Merle turned 79 today.

We've lost one of our true musical heroes. For me, it puts into proportion a lot of the discussions we see on the internet about fan wars, charts or awards.

These are some of the tributes I saw on Twitter:

This one hit me especially hard. I grew up listening to The Hag. He was one my of Dad's favorites. I can still sing so many of his songs and his voice is magic. I had the honor of seeing him several times at the Opry and I will never ever forget those times with my family. He said he was going to die on his birthday and he did - he went out an Outlaw as one would expect! I love that about him. And he was such a gentleman and so kind.

Also, if you haven't heard "Sweet Jesus", you must listen. Merle wrote it and wanted The Oak Ridge Boys to record it and they said absolutely not unless you sing with us - so here is "Sweet Jesus" with all 5 voices!!

This is great! Rolling Stone put together 30 of Merle's songs with some commentary for each one - you can listen to them all if you want to!

RIP Merle Haggard, my grandparents who would be almost the same age if they were still alive loved him, my dad also grew up listening to him, and as a result I have a lot of appreciation for Merle and his music.

Merle's parents left Oklahoma in the Dust Bowl, from very near Checotah. They share another link with Carrie's mother, Carole, who spent about a year as a baby in Bakersfield. It was about the displacement camp at Bakersfield that Merle wrote the song "Mama's Hungry Eyes", commemorating his own childhood. Years later, he was touring in Eastern Oklahoma, and saw a sign pointing to Muskogee (where Carrie was actually born) and said that his father passed through that place a lot. He wrote the song "Okie From Muskogee" (an anthem used by both supporters and opponents of the Hippie-Redneck Fusion).

For much of his career, he was a beacon of Outlaw Country - his loss will take time and sorrow to process, but his legacy certainly won't die.

Bruce and Kelly have released this tribute video. I'm sure there'll be many others - but it doesn't get much more faithful than this.

Bandera reminding Nashville why Merle touched a chord in so many of us.

Nashville put on a major anniversary tribute, at the Bridgestone Arena, last week - for what Keith Richards called Merle's "first birthday". There were moving statements from his widow, Theresa, and his youngest son, Ben, with other members of his family, performed on stage.

There is a write-up from Rolling Stone (which includes a full set list of the performances) here:
See the Set List of the All-Star Merle Haggard Tribute - Rolling Stone

It appears that the event was filmed, for future network TV screening, and possible video release - but dates have not yet been announced.

Meanwhile, members of the audience have posted their own videos - these obviously vary in distance and quality, but give a flavour of the event. This is a selection:
