Keith Urban - John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16

    Keith Urban
John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16

Songwriters: Shane McAnally, Ross Copperman & Josh Osborne
Producers: Keith Urban & Dann Huff
    Capitol Records Nashville

    Audio:

    Lyrics:
I知 a 45 spinning on an old Victrola
I知 a two-strike swinger, I知 a Pepsi Cola
I知 a blue jean quarterback saying I love you to the prom queen
    in a Chevy
    I知 John Wayne, Superman, California
I知 a Kris Kristofferson, Sunday morning
I知 a mama and daddy singing along to Don McLean at the levy

Well, I知 a child of a backseat freedom
    baptized by rock and roll
Marilyn Monroe and the Garden of Eden
Never grow up, never grow old
Just another rebel in the great wide open on a boulevard of broken dreams
And I learned everything I needed to know from
John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16

I知 Mark Twain on the Mississippi
I知 Hemingway with a shot of whiskey
I知 a TV dinner on a tray trying to figure out the Wheel Of Fortune
I知 a Texaco star, I知 a Gibson guitar
Still a teenage kid trying to go too far
I知 a jukebox waiting in a neon bar for a quarter

Well, I知 a child of a backseat freedom
    baptized by rock and roll
Marilyn Monroe and the Garden of Eden
Never grow up, never grow old
Just another rebel in the great wide open on a boulevard of broken dreams
And I learned everything I needed to know from
John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16

I spent a lot of years running from believing
Looking for another way to save my soul
The longer I live the more I see it
    There痴 only one way home

I知 a child of a backseat freedom
    baptized by rock and roll
Marilyn Monroe and the Garden of Eden
Never grow up, never grow old
Just another rebel in the great wide open on a boulevard of broken dreams
And I learned everything I needed to know from
John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16

Yeah, I知 a child of a backseat freedom
    baptized by rock and roll
Marilyn Monroe and the Garden of Eden
Never grow up, never grow old
Just another rebel in the great wide open on a boulevard of broken dreams
And I learned everything I needed to know from
John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16

    yeah, yeah yeah, oh, 3:16
    Yeah, Yeah
Found out everything I needed to know

I am so confused! What a hot mess...... all these religious images but not associated to Christianity or church. All these American images sung by an Australian. What do you learn from John Deere? How are you in the great wide open and on a boulevard of broken dreams both? A child of backseat freedom?

Much like taylor swift songs used to be, this tries way too hard to be clever and it ends up a mess. How are being a 45 played on a victrola, being a two-strike swinger associate to being "pepsi-cola"..........

    Good Grief!

Usually, I relate to Keith Urban more as a guitarist than as a singer - but this song interests me, certainly more than most of his previous album did.

The theme (which I found rather reminiscent of earlier songs, like Pat Green's "John Wayne and Jesus") refers to images and influences that have been significant in the narrator's life - and I found this rather evocative. Urban says that the song resonated with him when one of the writers sent it to him, and has also been popular with fans since he performed it live. He refers to "the poetic use of the three Johns and what each represents to me."

The John 3:16 reference is to the verse "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son", so I think the faith implication is pretty direct. The John Deere reference anchors the song in a rural background, and, although this sort of reference can be seen as over-used and rather hackneyed, I think it's justifiable in the context of the song, in expressing the mixed mesh of influences which are frequently felt in today's more complex society. John Cougar was a publicity nickname for John Mellencamp (though I believe he prefers to avoid it himself). Put together, the references to the Bible, a farm background, and music, sum up what we are led to believe shaped the narrator's early life. (Interestingly, though, the three main musical references - to Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson and Don Maclean (the song which contains the "levee" line actually refers to the death of Buddy Holley) - would relate the song more to Alt Country and Country Rock than to the Mainstream - but that is actually more consistent with Urban's early work than with his later Nashville solo career)

A side issue is that two of these writers have also been working on potential new songs with Carrie. Although we know nothing concrete about any of those songs, it's the general feel of the music that interests me most in that context. Although some fans may disagree, it wouldn't surprise me if some of Carrie's new sound is in the same general area.

When I first heard the song, I thought, oh no, Keith is trying to sound like Sam Hunt. However, Keith has always kind of done his own thing and the more I listen, the more I think it does sound like Keith. I think the song will probably grow on me as I listen to it more.

Music video was finally released, what with the song being nearly top 5 on airplay... It was never a great idea releasing a music video too late in a song's chart run, but especially with streaming being the way it is now and HCS being a thing, I think it's almost a waste to wait to release it so late. Maybe they had some issues with filming or editing that I don't know about. But at least they had an official lyric video out in the meantime.
