The first thing to note - Brandy Clark, nominated for Best New Artist - in the General Field! (This tops her CMA nomination, since the General Field involves the entire NARAS voting spread, some of whom are known to be indifferent or worse towards the Country sector - making getting noticed here difficult for a Country artist). Also, her label. Slate Creek, a small Texas outfit, have only released a handful of albums so far - including Angaleena Presley, and the Brothers Landreth. I'm proud of this nomination!

Ryan Adams, one of the big names in Alt Country, with a strong crossover career, which retains an alternative Roots feel, has triple nominations in the Rock Field - suggesting he has strong support among a section of the voters.

Here's his Gothic-inspired video for the track nominated for both performance and writing

Country Solo Performance - I would definitely give this to Carrie. All her Grammy wins, so far have been for performance (and that does slightly bug me - I want an album or song win at some point in future). But I see no reason why the Grammys should break the love they've shown her in this category in the past - and I have high hopes for a win here.

    Country Duo/Group Performance.

I love both Carrie and Miranda - but I'm afraid I can't find the love for this song. Its best chance, for me, would have been in Music Video (where nothing from Country was nominated)

I wouldn't put it past possibility for the Texas-Oklahoma Line feisty pair to win simply on their names and the novelty of the collaboration - but if I had a vote, it would go to Kimberly Perry and her brothers for tackling John Hartford's song "Gentle On My Mind" in the way it was originally intended - a rough-living drifter, in love with a more conventional woman - and sung with all the lines intact, following the old folk tradition of the narrator singing "in character", ignoring her own sex. I have a great respect for this inspired rendition.

    Best Country Song

A disappointing category, considering the range of songs ignored.

I can't share the love for "Meanwhile Back at Mamas" (which seems to be getting nominations all over the place), and notwithstanding sympathy for his heartbreaking struggle with dementia, Glen Campbell is not an artist I would award.

"Automatic" is a very mixed song - for me, it has interesting and unusual lyrics which take care to construct a series of images - which I find a desirable change from the verse-light and hook-and-chorus driven approach of so many radio songs. But I find the contrast between the musical style of Randy Scruggs' long acoustic lead and the heavily-produced choruses to be too discordant - and in the end the song is let down by its music. Again, this is a song which, for me, was helped by its atmospheric and well conceived video. The Dixie Chick reference was cleverly used by Miranda to show her homage to her past - and I wouldn't rule out that being noticed by some of the voters.

All told, though, I think "Give Me Back My Hometown" is the stronger song, with a more consistent theme, and a hightened sense of anger within the mood of nostalgia - and that would get my vote

    Best Country Album

A very strong category - and probably the one where the voters came closest to getting the nominations right.
Bentley and Church are deservedly among the best of the current male Mainstream artists - and the success of three Roots-influenced women among the nominees reflects what is currently playing a major part in providing the artistic saving grace of the format. I have a (hopeless) crush for Brandy (lol) - but between Brandy, Miranda and Lee Ann it's a can't lose situation, and I'd be delighted for any one of them to get it!

    Best American Roots

Rosanne Cash is also nominated in triple categories (performance, song and album) - and should win at least one of them

    This is "A Feather's Not a Bird"

In Roots Song, Jesse Winchester (who passed away recently) is nominated, in a belated recognition by the voters of a talent that influenced a great many artists, but failed to gain establishment approval for reasons stemming from the Vietnam era and controversies over perceived patriotic concerns.

Here he is, sadly hampered by growing frailty, singing the faith and hope-inspired nominated song

    Roots Album

Much as I love Rosanne (who would be a deserving winner) - I'm pinning my hopes here on Sturgill Simpson. It's just so important to me that this style of Country Music gets some wider recognition!

    Finally - Best Instrumental Composition.

An often neglected category, but Chris Thile's mandolin style illustrates the intricacy of Progressive Bluegrass, as it dominates much of the modern Festival scene.

Thanks for creating this thread, Farawayhills! For me, I think Country Album will be between the ladies, and I do think either Clark or Womack will take the win. They obviously have considerable support to garner noms, especially Womack since she isn't with any label right now, I think.... I would have loved to see SITW get a country song nom in place of American Kids but I'm sure Carrie will win that category and Album in the coming years. Duo/Group I would like to see either TBP or tim and faith take the win. I just can't get behind SB.
Happy to see Sturgill Simpson nominated. Been checking out some of his music, liked some of his songs, especially Turtles All the Way Down. Been meaning to buy his Metamodern album but I don't think they sell them in Australia, lol. Being a Carrie fan has definitely peaked my interest in all forms of country music, I have to say. Though I still don't understand why Jason Isbell wasn't nominated for any Grammys for his Southeastern album.

The Best New Artist category is interesting - there have only been three country artists to win - Leann Rimes 1997, Carrie Underwood 2007 and Zac Brown Band 2010 - In the early years of the category there were few country artists nominated but recently it seems they try to include a country artist every year. Here's a partial list of nominated but no win - Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks, Billy Ray Cyrus, The Judds, Brad Paisley, Gretchen Wilson, Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, Band Perry, Hunter Hayes, Kacey Musgraves, Brandy Clark

Note: The year Carrie won she was up against very strong competition - Chris Brown, James Blunt, Imogen Heap, Corinne Bailey Rae

I am so proud of the Grammys for recognizing the amazing talent that is Brandy Clark. I was just so pleasantly surprised when I found out. 12 Stories is an amazing record and I listen to it about everyday. Also, WOW at being nominated for Best New Artist. I was worried Brandy would not be able to put out a second album but with this kind of recognition, I think Slate would be foolish not to release another album from her. Btw, kudos to Slate for having Angaleena Presley on their label too. American Middle Class is a very good album and I listen to it all the time. I haven't listened to Lee Ann Womack's album yet so I ordered it from my library immediately to listen to it too.

I think SITW deserved a Grammy nomination for best country song but I'm glad at least Carrie was nominated in the solo performance category for it. I think she deserves to win that category but I wonder if it being a Christian song will work against her.
