Hurray For The Riff Raff - "Small Town Heroes" era

I hope some of you might like this group - Hurray For The Riff Raff

Their name is not the only rather unusual feature for a group with an Old Time feel to their music. The lead singer and instrumentalist, Alynda Lee Segarra, is of Puerto Rican descent, and grew up in the Bronx Borough of New York City - not a typical background for Old Time string bands, but she left home at 17, and roved widely through America, absorbing traditional music influences. Also, the band make a strong point of publicly identifying their sexual orientation, as they believe this can help to gain wider acceptance for sometimes marginalized communities. Alynda is also a campaigner against violence on women and minorities.

Old Time Mountain Music is the tradition that preceded Bluegrass (which developed from it and other influences in the 1940s). This video (from their 2012 album) illustrates that influence, blended with Western Music:

Although this Old Time feel is also present in their latest album, "Small Town Heroes", it also moves beyond that, and includes more Progressive musical influences from modern Country and New Orleans music as well. All the new tracks were written by Alynda Lee Segarra, mostly solo, with two co-writes.
You can hear the whole album on NPR, at this link:
