News of a forthcoming Natalie Maines collaboration

One of Natalie's rare appearances on disc is predicted (Thanks to Wild Turkey for the information - she is a very reliable source in this area)

The expected collaboration is on Robert Earl Keen's forthcoming album "Happy Prisoner: The Bluegrass Sessions", due for release in February. The track is said to be "Wayfaring Stranger".

(Robert Earl Keen is a leading figure in Texas music, especially associated with road songs and outlaw story songs. Those with long memories may recall that his drummer, Tom Van Shaik, was in the Dixie Chicks' band in their pre-Nashville days.)

("Wayfaring Stranger", a traditional song, is a much performed and much recorded standard. Emmylou's version is probably the best known. This should give the general idea

It's been confirmed - the record will also feature Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, guesting on fiddle, and vocal collaborations with Lyle Lovett and Peter Rowan

Man, I miss DC...please don't rule it out, Nat! Haha.

At least she's creating music again, though.

A far cry from two of the Texas greats collaborating-----

-----but this was also brought to my attention. A week or so ago, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles (the city where she now lives, and where her actor husband works), Natalie was tempted out on stage for a duet with Taylor Swift.

I posted the fuller version, because it begins with Ms Swift explaining how she was influenced to become a Country artist
Whether it implies that Taylor is keeping her Country identity on hold for her fans, I'll leave it to those who follow her to decide. But in the case of Natalie, I don't see this as having any real significance for a possible return to new work and new Mainstream recording. Taylor is at present a Pop artist, and this was a Pop concert. Robert Earl Keen is associated with the Outlaw wing, which Natalie has never abandoned.

Of more significance, in my view, was her appearance in South Carolina at a Zac Brown organized event, a year or so ago - but there is still no indication of the trio returning with new songs. They will tour next year, apparently both internationally and domestically - but it appears likely that it will be another retrospective of their older songs.
