    Singing with Orchestral Accompaniment

As Carrie performed so well at the Ravinia Festival with an orchestral accompaniment, it reminded me of the concert that Tift Merritt performed with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra in 2007 - and I hoped some of you might like to see that as well.

This is the the introduction, and a song from her 2004 second album (which was Grammy nominated for Best Country Album, and also helped her get three nominations at the AMA, for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year)

Tift has been influenced by Ryan Adams' personal confessional style of songwriting - and she toured as opening act for him, in support of her first album "Bramble Rose"

This is the title track to her third album (which hadn't yet been released at the time of the Symphony concert

This is the title track to her second album

(Zeke Hutchins, whom she introduces as her drummer is also the man she went on to marry)

Another of Tift's influences has been Emmylou (who said she stood out like a diamond in a coal fierld!)

Finally, this is her performance of Stephen Foster's Nineteenth Century classic "Hard Times Come Again No More"

Singing with an orchestra is like nothing else for a singer. The intensity that is felt when so many musical influneces come together to create a moment in time is just a wonderful thing to be a part of.
It reminds the singer that they are a part of something bigger and just participating in making that amazing music.

I was lucky enough to see Carrie sing live with an Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. And the experience clearly had an effect on her interpretation of the music. It was really cool to hear her as a musician among musicians. (not that her band isn't amazng! ha ha ha)

I've never heard of Tift Merritt. Is she still singing?

Yes, she's still singing, and is now on her fifth album.

She's considered a leading Progressive Roots artist, but probably isn't well known in the Mainstream. I was actually listening to her before I knew about Carrie (I've been on this site over five years - but I'm a latecomer compared with many of you!)

Tift gets good reviews - here's an example, which I found on Walmart's site, so Mainstream outlets do sell her albums
"As a vocalist, Merritt continues to go from strength to strength, and the purity of her instrument and the intelligence of her phrasing, as well her sure-footed musical instincts, suggest she's maturing into the Emmylou Harris of her generation. And with guest vocalist Andrew Bird doing his best Roy Orbison impression alongside Merritt's lead, "Drifted Apart" is the best ballad of broken hearts to appear so far in 2012. "

If anyone is particularly interested, and has the time, she is performing the whole of her latest album on YouTube (it lasts about 54 minutes)

I can tell you that the orchestra behind Carrie brought a whole new experience to her songs that night. When she sang Keep Us Safe the fans in the lawn went silent and literally hung on every word. The video of Keep Us Safe does not do the live version justice. (Cassie2 can back me up on this one)
