Maddie & Tae - "Girl in a Country Song"

The debut single by new female country duo Maddie & Tae takes on bro-country hard, and even directly references several popular songs of the past couple of years.

    Listen here, lyrics below:

Well I wish I had some shoes on my two bare feet
And it's gettin' kinda cold in these painted-on cut-off jeans
I hate the way this bikini top chafes
Do I really have to wear it all day?
    (Yeah baby)

I hear you over there on your tailgate whistlin'
Sayin' "Hey girl," but you know I ain't listenin'
Cause I got a name and to you it ain't
pretty little thing, honey or baby
It's driving me red red red red red red redneck crazy

Being the girl in a country song
How in the world did it go so wrong?
Like all we're good for is looking good for
you and your friends on the weekend, nothin' more
We used to get a little respect
Now we're lucky if we even get
To climb up in the truck, keep our mouth shut, ride along
And be the girl in a country song

Well, shakin' my moneymaker ain't ever made me a dime
And there ain't no sugar for you in this shaker of mine
Tell me one more time you gotta get you some of that
Sure I'll slide on over, but you're gonna get slapped
These days it ain't easy being that…

    Girl in a country song
How in the world did it go so wrong?
Like all we're good for is looking good for
you and your friends on the weekend, nothin' more
We used to get a little respect
Now we're lucky if we even get
To climb up in the truck, keep our mouth shut, ride along
And be the girl in a country song

    Yep, yep, yep

    Aw naw,
    Conway and George Strait
    Never did it this way
    Back in the old days
    Aw naw,
    We ain't a cliche
    That ain't no way
    To treat a lady

Like a girl in a country song
How in the world did it go so wrong?
Like all we're good for is looking good for
you and your friends on the weekend, nothin' more
We used to get a little respect
Now we're lucky if we even get
To climb up in the truck, keep our mouth shut, ride along
Down some dirt road we don't even wanna be on
And be the girl in a country song

    (Spoken)
    Yeah baby
I ain't your tan legged Juliet
Can I put on some real clothes now?

    Aw naw
Lyrics transcribed by Farce the Music.

How so? It's making fun of the bro songs. lol

The harmonies they showcase in their EPK have got me really excited too - I get a bit of a Dixie Chicks vibe from them, which makes sense as they cite DC as an influence.

they're trying to play both sides
    they love bro country??

"These guys have some incredible tracks. We're like, "We can't poke fun at them if our song doesn't live up to how awesome theirs are."

really? bro country songs are awesome?
sounds like they want to make sure they can still get booked on the big male tours

they seem to be doing this more for publicity then for any real conviction against how women are treated in bro country songs

I can't blame them for not attacking the "bro country" artists in the interview, and for expressing appreciation for their songs. It's one thing to write a song satirizing the cliches, and putting their lyric in the perspective of the female character - and something else to launch into a verbal attack to a journalist. Attacks of the second type often come across badly, sound like special pleading in an attempt to sound superior, and make fans defensive. Given their age, too, an interview attacking established artists could put them on shaky ground. Doing it in a song, in my view, is better - it gives them the high ground, is harder to dismiss, and is more likely to make other people involved in the making of music appreciate that there is another valid perspective.

I think, on the whole, it would be unrealistic to expect Mainstream artists to do what some journalists, some fans, and some Alternative musicians would like them to do - and really tear into "bro country". It's what is currently fueling a considerable part of the success of the format. For every fan who dislikes it, there's at least another who enjoys it - and many of those are women. Luke Bryan, Billy Currington and the others have legions of female fans. Believing that female fans "should" dislike the "bro" portrayal of the "girl in the Country song" is not the same as saying they necessarily "do" disliike it - these relatively unchallenging, flirtation-themed "good time" images are popular with a considerable number of listeners of both sexes.

Carrie was filmed at a recent award show singing along and swinging enthusiastically to Florida Georgia Line. I've seen no conclusive evidence that she actively dislikes "bro country" songs. She's called for more women to be played on radio - but she hasn't attacked the "dirt road party" style. Miranda said in her "Rolling Stone" interview that there's "so much more to say" - but, at the same time, she praised the popularity and attention from the Pop Music world that the format was getting. Given the radio playlists, the prominent women artists are in a fairly precarious niche - but they may actually like being in the position of holding that niche for the deeper and more adventurous songs.

I find Maddie and Tae interesting. Scott Borchetta has several "bro" acts of his own to promote - and he doesn't seem to have a particularly strong track record of keeping his more Roots leaning artists in active production for long. On the whole, I'd be happier to see them elsewhere, but I'd certainly like to hear what else they come up with. I agree with Jess that there is a DC vibe in their music. (The Chicks, and Jo Dee Messina, whom they mention. were also influences on Carrie, by the way). As far as I can tell, there's no sign of an album yet - but this is another of their songs:

I think it's hilarious! I like their comedic style...and they can sing! It might even help young girls to see THIS side of things. Kind of along the lines of NETY.

Yeah, the video is pretty terrible. Still vaguely optimistic that something might come from these two. So long as they don't go overwhelmingly Jesus on me.

Do we have any update on how the song is doing radio / sales wise?
