Billboard to publish new chart based on Twitter posts

As a sign of the power of social media today, Billboard will join with Twitter to publish a new chart based on the number of posts discussing a particular music release.
    Details are here:
Billboard and Twitter Partner to Create 'Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts' | Billboard

(The article says that it will apply to US music conversations - it's not clear, though, whether that will record all conversations about music or artists based in the US, or whether it will only record posts that come from an identifiable US IP address. As, in practice, most Twitter conversations of any length would be likely to include posts from users in a variety of locations, trying to separate them could become rather pointless)

If this were a thing before the Sound of Music, Carrie would have killed it that week.

When anyone has to resort to gimmicky things like this is just shows how irrelevant they are.

A highly suspect oportunity to promote and support product lines that in turn support and promote Billboard.

As I see absolutely no way of being able to "actually accomplish what the chart suggests" I see no point to it except to continue to promote product lines it chooses to.

The majority of the data in this new chart will not concern with Idol Carrie Underwood and country music

This won't really be reliable data as there's no way to truly measure it. People don't use hashtags for everything or even artists' full names, and song titles are often abbreviated.

It's just another gimmicky chart that will further dig Billboard's grave into irrelevance.

Based on the title, I thought this was an April Fool's joke. But then again, just based on the title, I thought this applied to the major charts.

Since billboard is in live with Taylor, this must just be another way to make her #1..

That crossed my mind too - but as the press release comes several days early it's presumably serious.

I can see the argument for trying to measure the level of interest on social media (and, let's face it, fan bases do show an interest in whether their artist is "trending", or whether x has more followers than y - if this chart takes off, it will certainly be talked about, and used in fan wars)

Assuming it is a serious development, though, it poses considerable questions. For example, some posts are music recommendations or links to articles and videos - others are hate posts, weird obsessions, spoofs, or spamming for retweets. Are they all to be treated equally, on the grounds that any mention of an artist shows some level of interest? What about the opportunities it would offer to pack the chart with endless repetitive tweets?

Any thing that can not be reliably tracked and counted (and they already know it is impossible) is suspect!

It will end up being as random as Beiber one week / Madonna one week / Black eyed Peas one week / Barbara Straisand one week / .......

OR!! it will be exactly whatI think it will be. Just another promotional tool to announce and promote the current top artists that Billboard Investors want promoted; Taylor one week / Katy one week / Gaga one week / Timberlake one week ......

Without any reliable way to calculate the data, it is nothing more than a promo tool.

I'll be absolutely happy if Billboard promotes Idol Carrie Underwood in the new chart for one week. So difficult

Its very possible she will be sooner or later.

But since there is no way of knowing how they intend to collect and maintain data, its impossible to really say.

Its been a while now that I have felt that Billboard does not promote Carrie with the same degree of "enthusiasm" they do others.

AS many have said about Billboard, if it is purely based on hard factual data, than sure sooner or later Carrie is going to end up as the most trended and will be #1.

I just don't believe that Billboard uses hard factual data anymore. They simply have too much invested in promoting certain products.
Thats just how I see them now.
