Oldies but goodies - what's a favorite oldie of yours?

Stumbled upon an oldie that I really enjoyed in my youth. Couldn't find a thread to post so I started this one.

Dust In The Wind - Kansas. I love the violin portion in the middle of the song.

Please Mr Postman by the Marvlettes is one of my favorites (and not bc Carrie did it in Hollywood). Also "Put your head on my shoulder" by Paul Anka, and most Dion songs.

I have always loved this song by the Carpenters after I listened to it with my Mom. 'TOP OF THE WORLD" by The Carpenters. My Dad and Mom have a huge collection of oldies.

If anybody has an interest in either regaining some lost memories or developing some new ones we have been discussing the Billboard Charts from the 70's for the past couple of years. I recap all the songs that enter the charts on a weekly basis & provide youtube links so everyone can get a feel for what was going on musically during the time. We are now at the end of 1975 & getting ready to jump into 1976. It's mostly about the music, but movies, TV shows & Idol are discussed as well. Check it out, we'd love to have you join the conversation!

Thanks for all the posts containing so many wonderful songs. Another favorite of mine, when I want to sing really loud in my car with no one listening is "More Than A Feeling" - Boston.

This is one that I always feel has considerable historical importance. It's Uncle Dave Macon's 1926 recording of "Sail Away Ladies" (originally a 78 RPM Shellac record, but since reissued in digitally remastered, cleaned up collections). Uncle Dave, an early Opry star, on banjo, is accompanied, as often, by Sam and Kirk McGee on other stringed instruments and support vocals. The stamped foot percussion is provided by Uncle Dave himself

It's important because it illustrates the early Mountain roots of Rockabilly (which didn't fully develop until the 1940s). It's the earliest recording I'm aware of that uses the word "Rock" in a musical context, in the chorus line "Don't she rock, daddy-o" (A slightly later Macon recording, in 1927, also used "Rock around my Saro Jane) . In the i950s, "Sail Away Ladies" was revived in England by Lonnie Donegan (with a few changes). John Lennon, in his early group, the Quarrymen, was a follower of Donegan,, and the music influenced the 1960s development of the "British Invasion".

I love Boston's debut album. Whenever I hear Foreplay/Long Time, I gotta blast it on the radio lol.

Foreigner's like the ultimate blast-in-the-car band, especially Feels Like the First Time, Juke Box Hero, and I'm Gonna Win.

    Speaking of great car songs:

    I love this thread. x)

A group that had a huge influence on the development of modern Roots music - New Grass Revival (John Cowan, lead vocal; Sam Bush, mandolin; Bela Fleck, banjo; Pat Flynn, acoustic guitar in this 1988 recording)

They managed to get a striking mix between a high-powered modern vocal and the Progressive use of traditional string band instruments. The Dixie Chicks were probably the most successful followers of this stylistic influence - but you can see elements of it in many of the best contemporary performers in both the Mainstream and Alternative sectors.
