'American Idol' Kris Allen and RCA Records Part Ways

'American Idol' Kris Allen and RCA Records Part Ways

American Idol season eight winner Kris Allen is no longer with RCA Records, a label rep confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.

Signed to the Sony Music subsidiary immediately after his 2009 victory over runner-up Adam Lambert, Allen released his self-titled debut album in November of that year. Moving over 80,000 units its first week out, it charted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and, buoyed by the single "Live Like We're Dying," went on to sell over 346,000 copies.

His follow-up, Thank You Camellia, was released in May 2012 and debuted at No. 26 on the album chart with first-week sales of 15,622, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Although the first single, "The Vision of Love," failed to gain momentum, Allen maintained visibility via his always inventive covers.

In September, Allen revealed that he and 19 Entertainment had parted ways and he signed with new management, Pearl Group Entertainment, which counts Chris Daughtry as a client. In fact, Daughtry remains among a small group of Idols still signed to RCA Records and other Sony labels. They include season one's Kelly Clarkson, season four's Carrie Underwood, season six's Jordin Sparks and season eight's Lambert.

Season seven's David Cook and season nine's Lee DeWyze were dropped from the RCA roster in May 2012 and October 2011, respectively.

So now AI season 7, 8 & 9 winners have been dropped by their labels. Hope Scotty can maintain his record deal, and P2 can achieve success on his debut album.

That's to bad but it isn't a surprise.

Kris's new album is very good but he just couldn't catch a break from the label.

I wonder why this is a trend? Changes in the music market from the time of the earlier winners? Kelly and Carrie casting such a huge shadow on Idol that the labels want the artist take the charts by storm. If they don't preform, well there is always next years winner. There are now competing shows that put competing talent out there? I have no idea, but it doesn't bode well for future winners or others that get initial contracts. It would be interesting to know how many of the non-winners who signed deals lost their label after the first album. Kellie Pickler comes to mind right away. Some of the questions that come up on CF are so intriguing, at least to my crazy mind, that I spend way too much brain time thinking about them.

Kris definitely a talent hopefully he can continue to make a living in music if so desire. He needed one more big single to get the attention of buying public. Hopefully we have not heard the last of Kris Allen.

Really hate to see this happen to someone with talent! I wonder if the outcome would have been the same if he'd gone country. Remember his duet with Keith Urban and Kris had done such an awesome job on that and know Keith really saw his potential. But Kris was actually honest with himself knowing he really didn't have the heart for Country.

Kris has done some nice covers in country but don't see it happening anytime soon. He has that cry in his voice too.
