Kacey Musgraves "Same Trailer, Different Park" Era

Kacey Musgraves is a singer/songwriter, probably best known here at CF as one of the co-writers of the album track "Mama's Broken Heart" from Miranda Lambert's Four The Record. She was also a contestant of the now-cancelled reality TV show "Nashville Star". Her lead single "Merry Go Round" will be released September 10. Here is the official video of the single:

Here is her version of "Mama's Broken Heart":

I wonder if she'll include her version on her upcoming debut album.

    Thanks for posting
Kacey used to be on my friends list on MySpace, and I've always hoped she'd get more recognition.
She released two teenage albums about ten years ago, and a more recent one in 2007.
As well as the songs you mention, she had a 2011 cut on a Martina McBride album ("When You Love a Sinner"). She was under consideration for a cut on Carrie's album in the Play On era, but the song wasn't chosen.
She helps Miranda run a pet rescue charity, and she tweeted "Hell YES! everyone deserves equal love!" when a fan asked her if Carrie's "Independent" interview made her happy.

Here's another song that I like:

Kacey's forthcoming album, by the way, is co-produced by Luke Laird

"Merry Go Round" is an interesting choice as an opening song. It has a deceptively light melody - but the lyrics are actually a sharp attack on the idealized rural and small town nostalgia that's a popular theme in the Mainstream. In words, at any rate, this seems quite a bold theme to tackle on a major debut release (though I admire her and Lost Highway records for backing it)

"If you ain't got two kids by 21,
    You're probably gonna die alone
At least that's what tradition told you.

And it don't matter if you don't believe,
Come Sunday morning, you best be there
In the front row, like you're s'posed to.

    Same hurt in every heart.
    Same trailer, different park.

    Mama's hooked on Mary Kay
    Brother's hooked on Mary Jane
And Daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down.

    Mary, Mary quite contrary,
We get bored so we get married
And just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go round, and round and round we go,
    Where it stops nobody knows...
And it ain't slowin' down, this merry go round...

We think the first time's good enough,
So we hold on to high school love,
Saying we won't end up like our parents.

Tiny little boxes in a row,
Ain't want you want it's what you know,
Just happy in the shoes you're wearin'.

    Same checks we're always cashin',
To buy a little more distraction.

    Mama's hooked on Mary Kay
    Brother's hooked on Mary Jane
And Daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down.

    Mary, Mary quite contrary,
We get bored so we get married
And just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go round, and round and round we go,
    Where it stops nobody knows...
And it ain't slowin' down, this merry go round...

    Mary, Mary quite contrary,
We're so bored until we're buried.
And just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go round...
    Merry go round...

Jack and Jill went up the hill,
Jack burned out on booze and pills,
And Mary had a little lamb,
Mary just don't give a damn no more."

I thought Kacey was being backed by Mercury, not Lost Highway? It doesn't really matter I suppose lol, seeing as both are Universal owned.
I like that Kacey is releasing a song like this to start. It will hopefully help her stand out. Most of the newer women in country are releasing nonthreatening tunes about love lost and such. Kacey has the guts to represent herself as she is with no glossy finish. Good for her.
I hope she does well with this song and her future endeavors. She could be a real breath of fresh air in terms of females in country music.

Thanks for posting the lyrics. I wouldn't have listened to the song had it not been for this. The lyric and message behind the song is quite intriguing as it successfully peels back the different layers that comes to small hometowns.

One thing I don't quite understand is the last verse regarding "jack and jill", and especially the phrase "and Mary had a little lamb". Would you care to explain? Thanks.

I think the names Jack and Jill are just extending the "nursery rhyme" theme of Mary, Mary Quite Contrary. However, I would guess that behind those names, they are extending the idea of small town hypocrisy implied in the song. Jack and Jill probably represent the couple who marry out of convention and boredom. Jack gets into booze and pills (reminiscent of the Bourbon and speed in the Don Williams song "What do you do with good ole boys like me). I would suggest that "Mary had a little lamb" refers to the Mary two doors down, who has an affair with the husband and presumably, a baby - but she no longer gives a damn

Single Review: Kacey Musgraves, "Merry Go Round"
    by Ben Foster
    September 10, 2012

A delicious, absorbing slice of country storytelling, flavored with a strong dose of everyday realism.

While Musgraves has been relatively quiet on the music front in days since her 2007 seventh-place finish on Nashville Star, she has tided fans over with projects such as an excellent collaboration with the Josh Abbott band, while also displaying her ample songwriting chops with standout cuts on recent albums by Miranda Lambert and Martina McBride. “Merry Go Round” marks her first official solo radio release, with an album to follow later this year.

The quiet, banjo-driven arrangement supplies a beautiful, comforting backdrop to an astute lyric which contrasts idealistic personal and societal expectations with the way life actually turns out. The course of one’s life is metaphorically described as “this broken merry go round.” People are expected to settle down, raise a family, ”be there in the front row like you’re s’posed to” at church every Sunday morning, only to stumble and struggle in daily battles with hardship, temptation, and personal demons. Anchored by an evocative melody and an authentic, lived-in vocal rendering on Musgraves part, “Merry Go Round” is a song that boasts a strong, tangible connection to the realities people face everyday – a country music ideal that seems to have been mostly abandoned by the mainstream.

While I have a hard time believing this song is likely to find a home on country radio, it’s certainly well worth a listen. If such a finely polished, understative gem as this is at all indicative of the quality of Musgraves forthcoming debut album, we could be in for quite a treat.

I just had to stop in to say that the quality of this song is so far beyond most of what is on country radio right now, in my opinion. I was so shocked when I heard this for the first time last week because I had completely forgotten about Kacey the past couple years and it immediately stuck with me. The lyrics are so well written and I love the emphasis on her singing rather than crazy, over-the-top production. I honestly believe this is one of the best songs to come out in country music in years, and I'm afraid it's going to be really underrated. Huge props to Kacey and the other two songwriters as well as the label for releasing it when it could easily be an unpopular sentiment compared to traditional songs about small towns.

I like her. She actually sounds a bit like Miranda, especially at the beginning of Merry-Go-Round.

^^She reminds me of Miranda too. I think Faraway mentioned before that they're childhood friends.

I actually prefer her version of Mama's Broken Heart. I think I'm going to buy her album. When is the release date?

The single is now #41 at Mediabase. Hope it continues to do well.

Kacey has also had a song, "Undermine", featured on the new TV show, "Nashville". She co-wrote it with Trent Dabbs (who recorded an EP with Ashley Monroe a few years ago)

Kacey also sang on the demo for TBP's new single. I'm guessing that means she co-wrote it? I don't know the writing credits for the song.

She may only be singing it for the publishers' promotion. I tracked down the demo - but it's said that it was written by Trevor Rosen, Shane McAnally, & Brandy Clark. I can't confirm whether that info is correct though (the songs have different titles, but the line "better dig two" is part of it),

Kacey and Kenny have both tweeted to say she will be the third opening act on the Kenny Chesney tour!

(Kacey says she hopes someone will hold her hand as she's liable to freak out, Lol)
