I know... that's why it's hard to explain lol.
It is basically the catchy songs and relatable lyrics that helped to "elevate" her voice for me. I mean, I won't ever be blown away by her vocals, or crave to hear her sing anything (unlike with Carrie or other great vocalists). But when she uses it effectively, it's good. Does that make any sense? lol
p.s. my sig is from one of the Play On tour videos. Can't remember which tour stop![]()
I was thinking about this in the car on the way back to my office, (my wife says I over think everything, but unless I’m unconscious I can’t help it.) .The simplest explanation for TS is, TS is a lousy vocalist, that’s why she is so good. It is country music’s existentialist offering.
Also, pklongbeach is correct in his analysis that this is a reflection of the “reality” TV culture. If you look at the history of the cult of celebrity you find that society use to elevate celebrities into larger than life figures. We needed an alpha character to follow and inspire us. That is what Carrie is. We can wish we were her, but we cannot conceive of being her. In today’s, “everyone is a winner” ethos we have fallen down the rabbit hole. Instead of excellence to look up to and aspire to we want celebrities that are us. That we can imagine being. It is the mediocrity of the crowd. This is the same reason why there are so many insipid TV shows, the producers, in search of ratings, aim for the lowest common dominator. I don’t think it is hyperbole to say that this is the same social pathology as Rome’s bread and circuses and you know what happened to Rome.
One other way to look at it is the parable of the King with no clothes. We point at TS and say the king has no clothes and instead of shock and realization, the crowd answers back, “so, teenagers and their moms love kings with no clothes”
There's really no simple or "right or wrong" answer as to why someone has become a huge star. I think we all have certain people who we look at and go, "How did THEY become famous?"
I hear people talk about Taylor's "it" factor all the time. I don't see it, but clearly her fans and Scott Borchetta see something entirely different. Taylor's fan are probably much more passionate about her overall artistry than say the non-fan who thinks she's nothing great.
A really recent example for me would be Nicole getting me into Guns 'N Roses. I knew nothing about them as a band or as individuals, but something clicked for me and then I went back. I felt an "it" factor right off the bat, whereas Jess sees nothing special in Axl or GN'R. Music is subjective, and what grabs you can be just as varied. It's a difficult thing to explain to someone if they don't feel the same way, but you know when it happens. It's just the same way with Carrie; we all adore her and see something special in her, whereas a lot of other people might hear or see her and go, "eh, she's nothing special."
Taylor did have an "it" factor during Fearless, but lost it afterwards in place of being a tabloid pop star. In the past few days I've been listening to ottawa's country radio station, and have never heard then play WANEGBT, yet this morning they played the hilarious hockey parody of it. Perhaps a movement can be made to get Taylor's older songs played on specific "old country" stations exclusively lol
I got nothing --
I like Taylor because she is such a sweet person. A girl i went to school with reminded me of her, and i realized why. They both have warm, open personalities. They are free with hugs and words.
Also, Taylor can literally write an emotion into a song. I have been able to relate to her music because it made me think, i am not the only one who has felt this way. She can write the highest of the high emotions, but she can also be lowest of the low. That is why she is so relatable. She isnt afraid to be honest and vulnerable and open. I cannot tell you how many times i can listen to one of her songs and it is exactly how i feel and what i think.
Omg haha 523670_527880307237838_779162300_n.jpg I didn't want to make a new thread just for this, so I'm just posted it here considering it is Taylor related lol I saw this on facebook though

See, now that was funny!
I actually like WANEGBT more than BA.
Any theories on why radio is not jumping on BA?
I am not sure why. I just got the song yesterday and i have already played the heck out of itIt reminds me of something Jewel would sing.
I've finally had the opportunity to hear Begin Again (on Sirius radio). My first thought though while it is definitely better than WANEGBT (or mature), I feel that she written a song like this but better. I'm not going to criticize of her songs always being about relationships because country music has always been a love oriented genre (especially of trucks lol), but it seems like a weaker copy of an older song. I like it, but she has done better.
My theory that radio isn't jumping on BA because they do not want to force feed people on country radio Taylor again. WANEGBT (anyone else get tired of writing the initials for this song) was a big manipulation on the charts. Country radio don't want to abandon Taylor because she does bring a younger demographic to listen to her songs. They have to be smart about almost "re-introducing" Taylor back to country radio.

It's not actually in the top 50 yet.
It may be that WANEGBT got pulled so quickly that radio has not had time to make an ajustment to include the new single yet. It seems, on the one hand, like a planned thing (what with her doing the intorduction on GMA), but then how do you plan for a flop.
I understand that the song was targeted for pop radio and the mainstream media coverage, but I don't think they actually planned it to underperform at country. Maybe they did.
Just seems odd. WANEGBT is pretty abruptly Gone! And BA is intented to take it's place and instead of the ususal hoopla over "the lastest Taylor single" it just sort of slinks into country radio with little or no notice at all.
I'm curious to know how strongly WANEGBT is doing at pop, and what single is next in line there.
WANEGbt had this great debut and didn't end up going anywhere. OF course 10 ten at pop is still a pretty big hit!
They didn't plan for a flop. They did plan for her to introduce all of the iTunes countdown songs on GMA. She will introduce the songs each week on the show, then on Oct 23rd she will be doing a live concert for GMA to celebrate the album.
I posted this earlier, but here it is again for those that missed it: 4-WEEK iTUNES COUNTDOWN SNIPPETS ON ?GOOD MORNING AMERICA? : Taylor Swift
do u guys think that BA is going to debut at #1 :s sorry I llike taylor but another #1 for her is too much. and i think they arent doing that anymore cuz they aklready declared it the 2d single

I don't see how.
With it being anounced already and the lackluster response, the only way I could see that happening is if she gets the CC push again at country.
And that is "not supposed" to happen to a #2 single.
Also, the reason WANEGBT debuted so high was because it got the push at all markets combined, along with itunes totals assisting.
With WANEGBT still on the pop charts, they will not be spinning BA.
So the debut will be no where near.
Nor would WANEGBT if it had not had that massively planned and executed manipulation of radio play.
BTW, how is BA doing on itunes??
