    Jo Dee Messina Has Cancer

Read today on Taste of Country that Jo Dee Messina is going to be starting chemo treatments on a fall schedule. It did not say what type of cancer she is fighting.

I'll always remember, on one of the first tv shows that Carrie was on, after Idol. It was Larry King, and Jo Dee was so nice to Carrie!! The others were Trisha and Martina, but Jo Dee was especially sweet to her.

Very sorry to hear this, and I wish her every hope and blessing - the whole process can weigh heavily on family and loved ones, as well as on the patient - but two things to bear in mind are that the recovery rate is growing markedly for many forms of cancer, and that the specialist surgical, oncology, nursing and support staff are usually dedicated, and among the best in their profession.

Carrie covered Jo Dee on her early recordings, possibly twice if I recall, but "Lesson In Leaving" is probably the best known. This is Carrie's version, which I think foreshadows some of the themes, Country Rock influence, and assertive "attitude" vocal style that she was to go on and develop in her later work

And this is a performance by Jo Dee, showing her spirited live performance style, and complex music, which I think shows elements of Muscle Shoals influence:

The song was originally recorded by Dottie West (who had sadly died several years before Jo Dee revived the song). Dottie was a friend and protegee of Patsy Cline, whose career transitioned from Traditional to more widely accessible mixed genre influence. Innovative in its music, I think her version shows more of the smoother "Nashville Sound" influence. Carrie's more raw and fiery version is probably more directly inspired by Jo Dee's - but I think the three women provide an interesting example of the chain of influence and innovation in the genre.

God be with Jo Dee and her family in this time of anxiety, fight and hope!
