Fatal bomb incident at Ariana Grande concert

A massive improvised explosive device has killed at least 22 people at a Pop concert in the Manchester arena, where US star, Ariana Grande, was performing. The concert had a large audience, of mainly young girls, some attending in groups or with parents. The youngest death reported so far was of Saffie Rose Roussos, aged only eight, and police say that twelve people under 16 are in hospital, with serious injuries.

The device is believed to have been detonated by a lone attacker, who killed himself in the explosion. The self-styled "Islamic State in Iraq and Syria" has claimed the dead suspect as one of its "soldiers", but, as this is routinely done, security forces are mounting a widespread investigation to follow up the suspect's background and contacts. Early investigation appears to have centered on the Fallowfield area of South Manchester, where property is being searched, and another man has been arrested without incident, for further questioning.

Although the Conservative newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, felt the need, for its readers, to carry a story "Who Is Ariana Grande?", the singer and former Nickleodeon series actress has had chart topping singles and album in this country, and has a large following. She is a vegan and a sometimes outspoken Feminist, who has an appeal that is considered here to be family-focused. The Prime Minister has described the attack as a despicable act of deliberate cruelty, targeted at an audience containing many vulnerable children.

Manchester is one of the largest cities in England, and the centre of a highly urbanized region. Its closeness to air, sea and rail links mean that it is likely to have attracted an audience well beyond the region, and, for example, two missing sisters had come from Barra, a small island in the Gaelic-speaking Western Isles of Scotland.

I couldn't believe this news when I read it on social media last night. It is sad and terrifying and sickening all at the same time. I pray for the families of those who have died, I pray for complete recovery for those who are injured, I pray for Ariana as I am sure she is devastated by this event happening at her concert, and I pray that our governments find a better way to seek out these terrorists whether working alone or in groups to prevent this kind of tragedy from occurring. These senseless, cruel attacks just scare me for the world we live in and honestly make me terrified of the day that I have to let my little girl go out on her own when she grows up. I know that we can't hole up in our houses and never leave and that is the biggest thing I struggle with as a Christian - I know I am not supposed to live in fear, but sometimes it seems there is just so much to be afraid of in this world.

Although I'm not sure of the identification, I think this may be the singer (who was obviously shocked, but unhurt) being helped to safety by officers

This happy and innocent picture recalls those of many fans who love to meet the artists they follow. It shows 18 year old Georgina (Gina) Callander meeting the star on an earlier occasion. Tragically, Gina was one of the victims, dying in hospital, while her mother was at the bedside.

Many of the injured are in critical condition, being treated in specialist units. Thoughts and prayers for all those caught up in this heartbreaking incident.

Who is the singer in the first picture? Was she an opening act?

I watched parts of it on my phone. I saw all of Miley and thought she was very good. Also saw Ariana sing Over the Rainbow....so beautiful and many tears in the crowd.

I just saw performances that BBC has posted on YouTube. Ariana Grande was highly emotional throughout the concert and broke down during her performance of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'. I love how she arranged this entire concert, and it was such a brave move. The criticism against her for cancelling some of her shows after the attack has been so unfair. People really need to be more considerate. These are sensitive times.

I'm not typically a fan of Ariana, but it was very brave and kind of her to do this concert. At the time the other concerts were cancelled, she probably wasn't in a great emotional state and probably had to figure some things out for herself - whether or not she wanted to continue touring in Europe. I'm sure it would also give her tour promoter/security teams time to assess whether those future concert dates had any security risks involved or were in countries that might not be considered the safest right now. Anyway, kudos to her for overcoming her fear and doing the One Love benefit concert. That is not an easy thing to do.
