    Air pollution map by NASA

NASA recently recently released a map showing the average number of deaths per year per 1,000 square kilometers (385 square miles) that can be attributed to fine particle matter pollution.

I was in China recently. I flew from Shanghai to LAX with a plane change in Beijing. I arrived at the Beijing airport around 4pm and was astounded by the low visibility due to the smog. I could see about 300-500 feet out as I looked outside the window.

The low visibility in Beijing is not only due to the smog, but also the fact that desertification is very serious in that area.
