Post 5-year-old boy shot baby sister dead

5-year-old boy accidentally shoots, kills 2-year-old sister in Cumberland County | Public Safety | Kentucky.com

    By Karla Ward kward1@herald-leader.com
A 5-year-old boy who was playing with a .22-caliber rifle accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister in Cumberland County on Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the state police.
The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. at a home on Lawson's Bottom Road.
The 2-year-old was taken to Cumberland County Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.
Cumberland County Coroner Gary White identified the girl as Caroline Sparks.
He said the children's mother was at home when the shooting occurred, and the gun was a gift the boy received last year.
"It's a Crickett," he said. "It's a little rifle for a kid. ...The little boy's used to shooting the little gun."
White said the gun was kept in a corner, and the family did not realize a shell had been left in it.
He said the shooting will be ruled accidental.
"Just one of those crazy accidents," White said.

    ---

It's good that they've armed the little boy. But why wasn't the baby girl armed?

Crazy accident? Why is a 5 yr old shooting a gun, and storing the gun in a corner without checking the chamber to make sure it's not loaded is crazy. In my opinion the parents are irresponsible and maybe they should be held accountable for the tragic accident. No matter if the gun was made for young kids it's still a gun..

Not just your state. If you research gun statistics you'll find that over 50 times per year in the U.S. a child 5 or under accidentally kills someone with a gun. That doesn't include the times a youngster has gotten hold of a loaded weapon but death wasn't the result.

Leaving a loaded gun available to a child is NOT an accident. It's total negligence.

Again, I feel the real question to ask is why the baby girl didn't get a gun designed for toddlers to protect herself? NRA will most definitely ask the same thing, if they even care!
