    On Stage This Week

Sara Bareilles; Big Boi; Carrie Underwood; Tracy Morgan; S. Carey; Crystal Castles; Trixie Whitley; Charles Bradley; Shinedown

By Journal Sentinel staff and freelance writers
    May 2, 2013 5:15 p.m.

    SARA BAREILLES
8 p.m. Friday, Milwaukee Rite Center, 790 N. Van Buren St. Sold out.
Piano-playing pop singer Sara Bareilles is a big enough name to bring people into the 1,339-capacity Pabst Theater when she rolls into Milwaukee. But for her current tour previewing her forthcoming summer album "The Blessed Unrest," Bareilles is performing solo in intimate venues. Management reached out to the Pabst Theater Group to book a tour date, but since the group's smallest venue Turner Hall Ballroom still fits over 900 people, Pabst officials worked with the Milwaukee Rite Center to bring Bareilles to the center's 425-capacity, 124-year-old auditorium for a rare concert. Not surprisingly, tickets were snatched up soon after going on sale. - Piet Levy, plevy@journalsentinel.com

    BIG BOI
    8 p.m. Friday, the Rave, 2401 W. Wisconsin Ave. $26 at the box office, (414) 342-7283 and therave.com.
Who needs OutKast? The very question may rattle fans of the hip-hop duo's seminal, Grammy-winning 2003 double album "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below." But while the group continues its indefinite hiatus, OutKast member Big Boi continues to produce innovative hip-hop on his own, including one of last year's finest albums, "Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors," which spans from Prince-worthy funk on "Mama Told Me" to thumping "In the A" to heart-racer "Shoes for Running," which features groovy garage pop from Wavves.
OutKast collaborator Killer Mike opens. - Piet Levy

    CARRIE UNDERWOOD
    7:30 p.m. Friday, BMO Harris Bradley Center, 1001 N. 4th St. $43 to $63 at the box office, (800) 745-3000 and ticketmaster.com.
Some day, "American Idol" will end - and its greatest legacy will probably be introducing the world to Carrie Underwood. The Season 4 champion is the Fox talent show's most successful winner, with six Grammys and 10 American Country Music Awards on her shelf (including two Entertainer of the Year trophies). She's sold more than 45 million records around the world, including 1.4 million copies in the U.S. for last year's blockbuster album "Blown Away," and has had more No. 1 singles on the Billboard country charts than any other female artist. Joining her Friday for 2013's first arena tour stop at the BMO Harris Bradley Center is up-and-comer Hunter Hayes, 21, who faced off against Underwood at the Grammys in February for best country solo performance. Underwood deservedly won.

    TRACY MORGAN
    8 p.m. Sunday, Pabst Theater, 144 E. Wells St. $35.50 at the box office, (414) 286-3663 and pabsttheater.org.
Will the third time be the charm for comedian Tracy Morgan? He was supposed to play the Pabst Theater in 2008, but canceled due to an alleged filming conflict. Then he was scheduled to play the larger Riverside Theater in 2010, and canceled again due to another alleged filming conflict. With NBC's critically acclaimed "30 Rock" ending this year, the notoriously blue Morgan appears to be spending more time on stand-up, so we expect he'll be honoring his commitment this Sunday, and rewarding fans' patience with a show at the more intimate Pabst. But, it must be said, Morgan did cancel a couple of other shows this spring. - Piet Levy

    S. CAREY
    8 p.m. Sunday, Turner Hall Ballroom, 1040 N. 4th St. $10 at the door.
It has been said, not with any particular wisdom, that a rising tide lifts all boats. However, the sudden success a few years ago of Justin Vernon and his Bon Iver project can't be said to be a rising tide so much as it was a minor squall. At any rate, it did help lift S. Carey. The Wisconsin native, known to his friends and family as Sean Carey, was a part of the burgeoning Eau Claire music scene by the time Vernon/Iver's first album, "For Emma, Forever Ago" became a significant sensation after its 2008 release on Jagjaguwar, and Carey, with his degree in classical percussion, was recruited by Vernon once Bon Iver became a touring proposition. In 2010, Carey released "All We Grow," composed on tour and recorded largely by himself. It had a minimalist approach Vernon could have appreciated, even as he expanded to a bigger sound (with Carey onboard) for his 2011 "Bon Iver" follow-up. Carey's "Hoyas" EP continued his exploration, and his Milwaukee appearance is a bargain-basement price for a man creating a few waves of his own. Milwaukee's Altos will also be on the bill.

    CRYSTAL CASTLES
    8 p.m. Monday, Turner Hall Ballroom. $25.
Supposedly, Crystal Castles got its name from a reference to She-Ra, the twin sister to the macho medieval-style hero He-Man who was so popular in the 1980s. The Crystal Castle became She-Ra's haven. Perhaps that's what it became, with a plural modifier, for Ethan Kath. Initially, Crystal Castles (also the name of an Atari game in 1983) was Kath's project, in which he explored electronica-style indie music. When he recorded a few songs with singer Alice Glass, their creative spark made Crystal Castles more than a solo indulgence.
The first CC album, self-titled, came out in 2008, and it did well enough (modestly) to keep CC working on another self-titled follow-up in 2010 and last year's "(III)." Kath and Glass have expanded well beyond the origins of their name. Truly, they now have the power. - Jon M. Gilbertson

    TRIXIE WHITLEY
    8 p.m. Monday, Shank Hall, 1434 N. Farwell Ave. $15 at the box office, (866) 468-3401 and ticketweb.com.
Although it didn't get much coverage at the time, the death of Chris Whitley in 2005 was a loss to fans of good, honest, raw music. He left behind a solid legacy and, in the person of Trixie Whitley, a continuation of the talent. Born in 1987 in Ghent, Belgium, where her father was living at the time, Trixie grew up fast, musically speaking, playing drums, doing theater work and taking on DJ gigs when she was a teenager. As she went between New York and Belgium, she began recording her work as a singer and instrumentalist. As she refined her own style, she also ended up in Black Dub, a solid band with producer Daniel Lanois. Earlier this year, Trixie Whitley finally issued a proper full-length debut, "Fourth Corner," on which she does both her talent and her father proud. Johnny Nicholson will open. - Jon M. Gilbertson

    CHARLES BRADLEY
8 p.m. Wednesday, Turner Hall Ballroom. $15 in advance, $17 day of show.
Charles Bradley is testament that you can never be too old to break into the music business. Daptone Records co-founder Gabriel Roth discovered the soul singer at a show where Bradley was performing as James Brown impersonator Black Velvet. In 2011, Daptone released Bradley's debut album, "No Time for Dreaming," when Bradley was 62, serving as the basis of a documentary, "Charles Bradley: Soul of America." Last month, he released his sophomore album "Victim of Love." He'll be joined at Turner Hall by his touring band, the Extraordinaires, including Milwaukee-born-and-raised sax player Freddy DeBoe. Singer-songwriter Paul Schalda, performing as Paul & the Tall Trees, opens with support from a full band. - Piet Levy

    SHINEDOWN
    7 p.m. Wednesday, the Rave. $32, $42 and $124.
Rock 'n' roll is neither dead nor on life support, but the concept of "alternative rock" probably died and stunk up the joint once every band with even a moderately non-mainstream sound got snapped up in the late '90s. Shinedown emerged after that, in the early 21st century when bands like Nickelback and Creed were representing the mainstream, and the Florida group was happy to go along for the ride. The group developed its sound somewhat as it went along, and last year's "Amaryllis" achieved the semi-anthemic sound for which it was always reaching. Bush was one of the beneficiaries of the aforementioned alt-rock frenzy, and the English band's sub-Nirvana sound filled arenas for a while in the '90s. Nowadays, lead singer Gavin Rossdale is best known as Gwen Stefani's husband, but the latest album, 2011's "The Sea of Memories," did pretty well for Bush, and for the old sound. Airbourne will complete the bill.

    - Jon M. Gilbertson

Prices do not include service charges.

Sara Bareilles; Big Boi; Carrie Underwood; Tracy Morgan; S. Carey; Crystal Castles; Trixie Whitley; Charles Bradley; Shinedown
