Taryn's Paso Robles Review - AUSSIE FAN!!
Carrie Underwood mentioned during her July 22nd concert that people had traveled pretty far to come and see her tonight .... namely from various parts of California including San Diego. But little did she know a 24-year old girl sitting six rows back had traveled all the way from Australia to see her!!
I have been a massive Carrie fan ever since her days on AI and it was absolutely a dream come true to see her live and she sooooo did not disappoint! To give you a little background information I had been saving for a couple of years to do some travel overseas for three months through Europe and the US. My plan all along was no matter what expense or where Carrie was playing in the US I would catch as many concerts as I could. For months before I left in May this year I would constantly check to see if Carrie had released any concert dates while I would be in the US. When I left Australia I had pretty much given up all hope of ever seeing her live as nothing had been released and Carrie was not currently touring.
I traveled through Europe and had an absolute blast, it was totally amazing. I still also decided to travel to the US (namely New York and Vegas baby!!) and organized to visit my friend Lori on the 22nd for four days before I flew back to Australia. However, towards the end of May while I was in Europe I received an email from Lori telling me Carrie will be playing at the Mid State Fair (only a short 3 hour drive away) and she got tickets for us ......... and you guessed it, the date of the concert July 22nd!! I could not believe my luck, I felt like it was definitely meant to be. I can say for sure that the things we don’t expect in life or what we don’t plan for that eventually happen are definitely more enjoyable and more memorable. I was on a natural high for weeks, I could hardly contain my excitement - even letting out an almighty WOOHOO in an internet café in Italy! After all this time I’d finally be seeing Carrie live, not just on the TV or over the internet. It’s probably hard for people to understand but we get absolutely no news about Carrie in Australia - unless she’s on Oprah!
The concert was absolutely amazing! It was such a surreal feeling as I made my way to my seat. I knew I was going to see Carrie but I didn’t feel like I was. I was absolutely filled with excitement and as soon as Carrie came out I was just awe-struck, almost memorized that Carrie was only a few feet away from me. We all knew that Carrie is blessed with an absolutely beautiful voice - and it’s even better live! There aren’t many artists that I’ve seen that I can safely say sound better live than on a CD - and Carrie is definitely one of them! I’ve worn out Some Hearts and Carnival Ride just listening to her voice and I was absolutely amazed at how outstanding she was!
She kicked off the show with FOTF, as she appeared up the stairs from behind the stage. I stood up and started singing and dancing straight away - while of course dodging people’s heads trying to get a couple of pictures of Carrie (Btw some turned out pretty good, other’s quite blurry ... so if anyone has any good pics that they wouldn’t mind sharing please let me know!!). She was absolutely amazing, but it was still extremely surreal for me. It didn’t hit me till later in the show that I was actually watching Carrie. She moved about the stage as she belted out SH, Wasted and CD wearing a hot pink shirt, black hip belt, tights and some pretty big heels. How she doesn’t fall over I’ll never understand - maybe heels are the key considering Ashley falls in flats lol!
Carrie then started up AAG and that was a really fun song to watch. You could tell Carrie loves this song. She looked so bubbly and was having so much fun up there - it was extremely entertaining. Then towards the end of the song she picked out 6-year old Mikayla to be her AAG. She was soooo cute! Carrie tried to ask her a few questions but Mikayla was pretty shy, but we did find out she liked art! Anyway the crowd helped her sing the rest of the song and I’m sure Mikayla will never forget it.
Then there was a clothes change for Carrie as the band rocked out to WYAB. I had hoped Carrie would come out and sing it but unfortunately she didn’t - but I had fun singing it for her instead! The lights then dimmed and Carrie appeared at top of the stage surrounded in blue light wearing a lovely white shirt which was absolutely gorgeous! She sang the bridge of IYH before continuing with IKYW. OMG, her vocals were amazing during IKYW! It sent a shiver down my spine. I was slowly starting to realize ‘yep, I’m at a Carrie concert’. She moved about the stage and the crowd were totally in awe of her vocal talent. She got a massive cheer, but the biggest cheer was saved for her next song JTTW! I actually started tearing up - it was an emotional performance and by far the best I’ve ever heard her sing it. I ended up having to sit down for a bit to try and recompose myself - I was actually crying. It definitely felt extremely real now and seeing Carrie live is something I will never forget.
Luckily the next song was Twisted so I stood up for the more upbeat song and of course started dancing again! Most people were still sitting down but no way was I going to do that. I felt like sometimes Carrie looked over towards us and saw we were having an amazing time and enjoying her music she would smile or wave and acknowledge us, it was awesome!
Then the band started up TMBIM as Carrie talked about how she would normally complain about men before singing the next song, but pointed out she didn’t have a ring on her finger and she was looking for Mr Right. She saw a few good looking guys in the crowd and she wasn’t wrong about that, there were some hotties around - that was for sure! Anyway then Carrie said she had found him, he was only a foot tall and furry and everyone knew him - his name is Ace! It was so cute and I really enjoyed this song. I already loved it anyway and it was even better live. It must be such a fun song for Carrie to sing live, she has a lot of fun with it.
Yet another clothes change and Carrie came out wearing a gorgeous long colorful shirt. I saw it and wanted one straight away. It was amazing but I’m sure I won’t look half as good as Carrie in it - and unfortunately Carrie has said she didn’t remember where she got it from.
The band kicked off the last set with LN - OMG it was hilarious!! I love this song but I will forever remember it as the time I saw Ashley stack it! All was going well until Ashley came across the stage to dance with Carrie. As he walked past her (turning towards her as he moved to stage left) he lifted his head and turned around only to find Mark’s foot in the way and he tripped over. It was extremely funny, and even funnier that I was able to catch it on video! Carrie absolutely lost it as she was singing about “thinking about Elvis” that she started laughing so hard she could hardly finish the song. She briefly recomposed herself, but once you’ve got the giggles it’s really hard to stop! She lost it again during “how did this ring appear” and couldn’t sing. It looked as though Carrie was getting annoyed with herself and it was really cute. So then she says “Come on guys, can I get a little help here”. The crowd all starts to sing and she is finally able to finish the song - albeit still laughing at the end!
As the crew set up the chairs for DFTRM Carrie told us a story about saying a little prayer with the band when they’re hanging out before the show. She mentioned that Ashley said he would not fall during the show and more than likely he probably prayed for it too. Then Carrie started singing “Sometimes I thank god for unanswered prayers, Ashley may have fell but at least it wasn’t down the stairs!” Of course she started laughing again - it was absolutely classic!
Carrie then sang DFTRM and I absolutely lost it - she sang it so beautifully, her vocals once again were just outstanding. Carrie told us how special this song was to her and it got me thinking about my mother. I’ve been away from home travelling the world for three months and obviously haven’t seen her at all. I was definitely missing her and thinking about how great it would have been if she was here too. My mother was even more excited than me when I told her I was going to see Carrie live in concert. I cried a lot during this song, it was very emotional for me and you could tell it was for Carrie as well.
Next song was ITYS and once again her vocals were amazing - particularly when it was just Carrie and the guitars. It was beautiful! I hadn’t heard her version of HSH until in the car driving to the concert - and she did not disappoint live. I really got into this song and Carrie did an awesome job on it!
After that Carrie sang JAD, GOOTT and SS. I really just enjoyed these songs and took the whole atmosphere in as who knows if or when I’ll ever see Carrie again. I was ecstatic and extremely happy. Words cannot describe how amazing Carrie is live and I feel so lucky to have been able to see her in concert.
Carrie then left the stage ...... but I knew she would be back for an encore - she hadn’t sung BHC yet! She kicked off the encore with PC - definitely one of my favorite ‘Gunners’ songs. It was so awesome, a real party-like atmosphere and Carrie owned that stage up there. Carrie then of course finished with BHC. OMG - it was so fantastic! When the crowd started singing it was so much fun and everyone got into the song, even those people who had been sitting down the whole time lol! Carrie finished like she started on top of the stage as she was lifted to down below the stage and waved us goodbye. The lights came on and I just sat there for a bit - taking it all in and truly appreciating what I had just witnessed. I couldn’t stop talking about it for the whole 3-hour drive home - and I’m still talking about it now!
So there it is, you have my first Carrie concert review! I hope I haven’t bored you too much and I’ll try put up some pictures when I get back to Australia (I’m leaving tonight). Carrie was absolutely amazing and it’s definitely something I will never forget!

That was an amazing review!! I am sooooo happy that you had the experience of CARRIE LIVE!!! Were you aware, that Carrie did all that with infected tonsils?!! She is unbelievable!! I'm sure that Carrie will come your way, someday...and you will see her again!!

what a great review! thanks for sharing so much about wonderful Carrie and the concert but also your reaction to it. amazing that it got scheduled just when you planned to be in California!
i can feel every word of your review!! i too am from a far away country and have almost given up hope of ever seeing her in person!! everytime i read a review, i kinda feel sad because i dont know if i ever will get the chance to see her live and of course i would like to meet her too!!! but it just seems too far impossible!! but still.... i can only hope....

No probs. The other review you read I believe was from Sarah - another aussie who saw Carrie last year. I have never seen her in concert before until 2 weeks ago

Awesome - glad you liked it!! Don't give up hope, I never thought I would get to see her and out of nowhere it happened for me. I would read reviews and d/l videos and I would get kinda sad too ............. but I feel this makes it even better when you finally get to see Carrie live. I think I appreciated it even more than seeing another artist in concert. Carrie definitely did not disappoint live and I can only hope I will get to see her again but if I don't it's something I will never forget.

Yeah I think I'm pretty loyal. I've been here since May 2005 i think and I'm always posting and d/l stuff. I never thought my dream would come true to see her live and it did, so definitely hang in there you never know what might happen (if you haven't seen her before). Hopefully one day Carrie will do a world tour or something coz I'm sure there's heaps of fans out there who can't see her in the US that would do almost anything to see her live! All I can say (and what you've read in my review) is that she is absolutely amazing and I feel so lucky that I've been able to see her ....... even if I never see her again in concert this experience will remain with me forever. Probably sounds really stupid but the concert had such a huge effect on me, it's really hard to explain but I think my emotion came through loud and clear in my review. It still feels really surreal but I know it happened lol! I would love to see Carrie released a concert DVD or something, it would be the next best thing as to seeing her live in concert

It's OK --you were there at the concert is the most important thing !
I miss that Carrie's Audition blouse (SP?) you have had that signature for A LONG LONG TIME !
