Carrie Underwood wins CMA International Artist Achievement Award

Carrie Underwood, Rob Potts Honored With CMA International Awards

The Country Music Association (CMA) has announced more International Awards recipients for 2017. Australian promoter Rob Potts was recently honored backstage at CMC Rocks QLD Festival in Australia with the Jo Walker-Meador International Award, while Carrie Underwood was honored backstage at the Grand Ole Opry while celebrating her 100th performance with the CMA’s International Artist Achievement Award.

Formerly the International Touring Artist Award, the CMA International Artist Achievement Award recognizes outstanding achievement by a U.S.-based artist who contributes to the awareness and development of country music outside the United States.

Underwood has made touring internationally a priority since performing her first U.K. concert with a quick sell-out at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in 2012, followed by sold-out tours throughout Australia and Canada. After first headlining C2C in 2013, she became the first artist to headline twice, performing in London, Glasgow, and Dublin in 2016, as well as adding dates in Sweden and Norway. Underwood made three additional trips to the U.K. in support of her recent Storyteller album for the Apple Music Festival and major TV performances including X Factor and The Jonathan Ross Show. Last winter, she reteamed with former tour mate Keith Urban for an arena/stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand, bringing her to nearly 25 international markets over the course of the year.

Decided to post it in a new thread because, not only is this a huge award, but also because we're still hurt by last year's CMA Awards and this Sunday's ACM Awards, so it should make us feel better.

I don't know about you guys, but the International Artist award feels far bigger and important than EOTY.

Any country artist can win EOTY, but FEW can win International Artist.

International Artist is pretty much International EOTY.

I'm TRULY emotional right now, I even cried.

I've wanted THIS award for years, God only knows.

because she made several stops worldwide, including headlining that huge UK mainstream event. She deserved it.

The number of winners of this award is very small.

Only legit awards here. No frauds, no backdoor dealings, no voting bloc.

Eight legit CMA Awards: more than Faith, Shania, Reba, Martina, Trisha, LeAnn etc
and almost the same as Dolly (ten).

^ Doesn't Carrie's CMA Hosting Award count as a CMA? that would make it 8.

I love some of those people - and love to see Carrie in that company! !

BR5 49 seem particularly appropriate, as they were also Arista label artists - and even if some people here have probably forgotten them, their music pretty well sums up the way I feel about this great news. (William Redbird, who co-wrote this old song that the group are covering - along with several early Rockabilly numbers from the 1940s - was from Eastern Oklahoma - so, at least to my whimsical mind, it's nice to see them bookending the list with Carrie at the other end! - Feel free to imagine me showing my delight by bopping to this song, lol)

Tastes change, of course, and the English Country Music market has evolved since that award was first announced. Carrie's mixture of Country Rock and sophisticated Contemporary Country provide a strong basis for popularity. Although England is the larger - and perhaps more stylistically diverse - market overall, Scotland and Ireland probably have a relatively higher proportion of Country fans to their smaller total populations - and adding a slight shift to more Traditional elements could help there. My feeling is that the Northern Continental markets (of which Germany is the largest) tend to favour a Traditional and Rock mix).

The subtleties of ACM - CMA rivalry are something of a minefield, and it's probably easy to over-estimate them. But Carrie has generally seemed more favoured at the ACM. Now that that may be changing - let's just say, I'm not surprised to see the CMA stepping in to give her this prestigious one. They have far more international members (and international offshoots) than the ACM - and I wouldn't see any connection between this award and UMG (If UMG are going to be a help, it will be in future).
