Dirty Laundry Video Review & Debut of Dirty Laundry Video on ET

Very insightful review of the Dirty Laundry Video and its Symbolism:

Carrie Underwood hangs her lover out to dry in her brand new music video for "Dirty Laundry," metaphorically speaking. Packed into three minutes of footage, Underwood presents one of her most polished clips, in black and white filter, presented as a smorgasbord of scorned women confronting their dirty-rotten beaus. She also unleashes some hefty symbolism in the form of some of nature's finest beasts and furry friends.
The video premiered exclusively via Entertainment Tonight.
The country superstar -- who is up for Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year (for 2015's Storyteller) at this year's 50th CMA Awards -- serves as the focal point of the clip. Meanwhile, a lion, an elk, an owl, a peacock, a snake and a horse splash across the screen at various moments in the music. Stylistically, "Dirty Laundry" is high-art piece at the price of unraveling a distinctive narrative, as is usually Underwood's way of doing things. Directed by Shane Drake, known for his work with Panic! at the Disco, Lady Antebellum, Tim McGraw, Paramore, Kelly Clarkson and Little Big Town (among countless others), the vivid montage of sleek, empowered and diverse female figures and their seductive, lying men reads as not only a commentary on infidelity in the modern era but also as a play on human and animal instincts and how those boundaries are often blurred.
In fact, that is exactly what Underwood intended for viewers to think. “I really connected with Shane’s artistic vision for the video. It’s all about emotion and that moment when a woman has finally reached that point, after the heartache, of being done with a relationship," Underwood says. "Shane had the idea to include some beautiful animals that represent the parallels between human and animal behavior and instincts, which look great interwoven with visuals of emotional women and men. It gave us a way to portray one of my songs in a way we’ve never done before.”

The specific choices of animals to feature packs on a whole new layer to the song. While the lion represents strength and courage, the owl upholds an element of wisdom, peacock with awakening, the elk with intuition and the horse with freedom. Of course, the snake can mean many things; there's the clear reference to the Garden of Eden and the serpent causing Adam and Eve to fall from grace, but the snake has also been used in global cultures to represent fertility (probably not intended here) and also transformation -- Underwood's character finds herself marching through devastation, grief, sadness, anger and finally confidence to do what needs to be done.

"Dirty Laundry" serves as the fourth single from Underwood's wildly acclaimed Storyteller album, anchored by three previous No. 1 hit singles, the "Smoke Break" lead, "Heartbeat" (with Sam Hunt on backing vocals) and more recently, story-song "Church Bells." Grab the album now on iTunes.

Underwood returns to the CMA Awards next month as co-host, alongside Brad Paisley, for the ninth year running. The show airs live on ABC at 8/7c.

At first I wished it was more of a literal interpretation with her in the house and a clothesline somehow (I just always pictured this specific country house during this song). However, as the video went on I really came to enjoy the emotional weight behind the song through the other women that were singing along. It kind of transformed my interpretation of the song.

Carrie really is striking in black and white too.
