Carrie Underwood, back with Storyteller, says being a new mom has changed her outlook on life

Country music star Carrie Underwood says she wanted to show off all her various sides on her latest and fifth studio album, Storyteller, in stores Friday.

“I think it’s like playing characters,” said Underwood, who first leapt to stardom after winning American Idol’s fifth season in 2005.

“It’s easy for me to just kind of get lost in whatever it is I’m singing. I’m grateful that I can do that. And I’m grateful that I’m in a genre of music that it’s okay to sing a cheatin’ song, and then singing something that’s a bit more aggressive and then turn around and sing something that’s more faith-based. There’s room to just explore emotions.”

Of course, the most significant new role for Underwood is being first-time mom to 7-month-old son Isaiah with Peterborough-born NHL player-husband Mike Fisher.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” she said with What I Never Knew I Always Wanted the most personal Storyteller tune about being a wife and mother.

And she’s open to having more kids.

“Oh, definitely,” said Underwood. “If every baby were like Isaiah, I would probably just keep having them. He’s the most amazing baby. He’s just a champ. ... He wakes up in the morning and he’s just smiling and laughing. He’s just a cool guy.”

We caught up with Underwood in Toronto recently to discuss Storyteller, motherhood, and more.

It sounds like motherhood is agreeing with you?

I was stressed out before I even had him. Like, ‘How am I going to do this? What’s going to happen when my worlds collide? Like I’m trying to be mom and I’m trying to be Carrie Underwood, what’s going to happen?’ You know, you just dive in.

Did anyone in the business help you navigate this time in your life?

(Lady Antebellum’s) Hillary Scott was so great, is so great. She’s one of the nicest people ever. (Sugarland’s) Jennifer Nettles. Kelly Clarkson. It’s just nice even if you’re kind of venting, to be like, ‘I know you understand me!’

    Has it changed your personality?

I feel like I’ve gotten better at being like, ‘Could you do this? Honey, could you do this?’ Asking just for help, like a friend to come over and watch him while I clean the house for a couple of hours.

I’m amazed that you clean your own house?

I have somebody that comes once a month and they like get the floors good (but) I like to. I like knowing where my stuff is. It’s more of a problem of other people, not going through my stuff, ‘cause they’re putting it away, I (just) like order. .... Slightly OCD. I would like to be more organized. Mike taught me how to be not so organized and learn to be okay with it.

Did you have a sound in mind for Storyteller?

It was hard getting started to be honest and then I heard a song, I got the demo, and I was like, ‘That’s the door opener.’ Choctaw County Affair – it was just funky, very, very cool and swampy and there’s nothing else that quite sounds like it on the album but it just had this like twang and attitude about it. And then it was easier to write (and pick) songs after that.

Were you more relaxed in some ways post-baby?

I think so but there’s definite pressure not even that I put on myself until I’d see headlines like, ‘Carrie Underwood – she’s back! Making her comeback!’ I’m like, ‘Where did I go?’ It’s not like I was in hiding for a decade (her last studio album was 2012’s Blown Away) and now I’m back.

Will Isaiah affect you touring for Storyteller?

My husband and I we met when were both apart. We lived in different countries for the first six months of our marriage and have dealt with me being on tour and him playing and it’s always been fine. But now there’s definitely this whole new thing to take into account and Mike wants to see his son.

    So lots of Canadian dates?

I don’t know. I think we’re going to shoot for the moon. I would imagine. The crowds are great and I have lots of family here to come see us.

Do you have some ideas about the production yet?

I would imagine this one is going to be a bit simpler because that’s what the album is. ... Arenas (definitely) but not so many bells and whistles.

Was playing Maria in the 2013 live TV production of The Sound of Music the scariest thing you ever did?

Yes. Other than American Idol, that was very scary. ... Somebody asked me today like, ‘Are you going to do more of that?’ I was like, ‘No. I climbed Everest. I don’t want to go back. I went up and came down and it was great and I’m good.’

I'm kind of excited about a simpler tour. More focus on Carrie and her vocals! All they really need is a really cool screen. I'm a fan of Carrie in the clothing style she wears to perform at festivals, although I'm sure she'll glam it up a bit on tour. Kind of hope the styles are "western" inspired.
