    NYT Review was a C not a F:

Q: Well then, can I see all of your grade conversion scales?

A: Absolutely! Some of the conversions are obvious (for example, if a critic uses a 0-10 scale, his/her grade is simply multiplied by ten). Some of the less obvious conversions are displayed below:
    4-Star Scale
    Their Grade Converts to
    4 100
    3.5 88
    3 75
    2.5 63
    2 50
    1.5 38
    1 25
    0.5 12
    0 0

    Letter Grades
    Their Grade Converts to
    A or A+ 100
    A- 91
    B+ 83
    B 75
    B- 67
    C+ 58
    C 50
    C- 42
    D+ 33
    D 25
    D- 16
    F+ 8
    F or F- 0

Then, aside from the 50 by NYTimes and 60 by Exclaim, now we have a beautiful 80 by allmusic and now a 91 by EW.

    YAS.

No, a 70.25 AVG = B- (see my Metracritic score conversion post above)

This....... all he did was state that he doesn't like her and that he likes someone else better. Suggesting that Swift and Lambert are the only two poles of country is enough for me...

The sad thing is he seems to suggest that Lambert and Swifts artificial "personas" are what works for them. ... and apparently Carrie being a full fledged actual human is not interesting enough.......

I actually think that is what makes Carrie so popular. Cause she is real..... not a fake persona........

this reviewer should have just stepped out of this review and told someone....I can't do this fairly cause I don't even like her....

Steven Thomas Erlewine is one of the site's senior editors, and a practicing musician himself (in Ann Arbor, one of the college towns that is a significant centre for Roots Music in the North). His reviews are likely to be quite authoritative.

I'm glad that he saw a likely Bobbie Gentry influence - I also felt that she has been an influence on Carrie's Southern Gothic interest - and although I haven't heard CCA yet, comparisons with the Mississippi background and what might have happened up on Choctaw Ridge in the Bobbie Gentry song are bound to be made.

On a perhaps more ambivalent note, I've also commented before in similar terms to Erlewine's observation "She is, as she says in her album title, a Storyteller, and there's an unmistakable distance between her theatrics and the subjects of her tunes; she isn't living these songs, she's performing them."
However much this dramatic story telling pleases fans, gaining sales and radio support, I think it can be a downside for gaining some critical support and some grass-roots voting support. There undoubtedly is a critical preference for more realism, and more personal involvement in the songs - and I think that may effect some of the other reviews we see.

If Carrie did the opposite of what she does and scaled back her vocals, she'd be criticized a ton more.

So far, the critiques have been similar to what she always gets - she's not personal enough or connected enough to the lyrics.

    THEY ARE STORIES.

I still think some people (young and impressionable as well as adults) think that singers only sing real songs about themselves and their real lives.

To live such a naive life would be unfortunate.

And if someone is singing about murder, and can "live" the song, then they wouldn't be making music about it...
