Carrie Underwood celebrates past, awaits baby

This time next year Carrie Underwood will go by a new name — Mom. She'll be knee-deep in Christmas presents for a tiny boy, on the hunt for the perfect pint-sized holiday outfit, her Christmas tree might have a baby's first Christmas ornament, and a third stocking will hang from her mantel.

The country singer and her pro hockey-playing husband, Mike Fisher, will be first-time parents in early 2015.

"It's such a crazy thing to think about," Underwood said. "…Our lives are definitely about to change."

But, she'll deal with Christmas 2015 when it gets here.

Right now she's more focused on delivering her new album. "Greatest Hits: Decade #1" is due in stores Tuesday.

The two-disc, 25-track collection marks Underwood's 10th anniversary since trying out for "American Idol." The greatest hits package is home to all of her singles, duets withBrad Paisley, Randy Travis and Vince Gill, work tape recordings from songwriting sessions and two new songs — including her faith-based hit "Something in the Water."

Underwood said when she and her team first discussed a greatest hits collection, she balked because she didn't feel like she was deep enough into her career to release a compilation. But when they started talking about her roster of hits — songs spanning from "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and "Before He Cheats" to "Blown Away" and "See You Again" — she realized if she waited all of her hits might not fit in one place.

"I don't really want to cut anything," said Underwood, who will kick off the inauguralAmerican Country Countdown Awards next week. The show will air live at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 on FOX from Nashville. "I want it to be a real greatest hits and not just picking 10 songs I want to be on there."

Since winning "American Idol" in 2005, Underwood has picked up six Grammy Awards, been crowned the Academy of Country Music's entertainer of the year twice and charted 18 No. 1 songs. She has sold 64 million albums, was named a member of The Grand Ole Opry, co-hosted the CMA Awards seven times with Brad Paisley and starred as Maria von Trapp in NBC's Emmy-winning "The Sound of Music Live!"

"It sometimes still doesn't feel real," Underwood said of all her success.

She remembers sitting in her pajamas three feet from the TV watching the CMA Awards, hoping her favorites would win and being mad when they didn't. Now, she's hosting the awards.

"Things like that still blow my mind," she said.

    'Gift of a lifetime'

Paisley counts himself among Underwood's early champions. He took her on tour soon after her win on "American Idol" because he "wanted her to be the biggest artist in country music." His tour was her second, and Paisley remembers her early concern that people felt like she didn't deserve the success.

"She said on the bus, 'I think people may resent me a little bit because they think I got this from a TV show, but I've worked my whole life towards things like this,' " he recalled.

He told her that however she got everybody's attention had nothing to do with whether she deserved it.

"She's probably the best pure singer I've ever heard in our format," Paisley said. "We got the gift of a lifetime when she was plucked out of Oklahoma and thrust into the spotlight."

Underwood thinks it is a blessing that she found success through "American Idol" a bit later in life. By the time she was on the show at 22, she had already graduated college, learned how to live on her own, balance her checkbook and pay bills. She credits her level head to her parents and those experiences, and said that without them fame might have "changed me into a person I might not like too much."

Joe Galante, the former chairman of Sony Music Nashville, was at the helm when Underwood signed her record deal there and remembers how careful she was when choosing songs for her first album, "Some Hearts."

"She said, 'I know these are perfectly good pop songs, but I'm a country act. I don't know why people don't understand that,' " Galante said. "From the very beginning, she thought about what was important to the country music industry and how she could use her fame to help. Humble is an understatement with her. No drama anywhere."

In some ways it feels like it was yesterday, Underwood said of breaking out in the format. But in other ways, it feels like it was a million years ago.

This time 10 years ago she was doing the Hollywood week of "American Idol."

"It's crazy to think about all the things I've been blessed enough to do," she said.

Underwood's most treasured memories include winning "American Idol," her Opry induction and her role in "The Sound of Music Live!," but it was her first headlining tour in 2008 that reinforced she had "made it."

It's different when you go on tour with someone else, she said. It's still their show and the pressure doesn't land on Underwood to fill the seats. When she settled into the headlining role, she knew people were there to see her, and they were singing along to her songs.

"That's when you fly," she said.

The songs fans are singing are often the ones Underwood had a hand in writing. She helped pen nine of her 18 No. 1's and the two new tracks on "Greatest Hits: Decade #1," her gold-selling single "Something in the Water" and "Little Toy Guns."

    New chapter nears

Hit songwriter Chris DeStefano co-wrote both of those songs with Underwood and said she's a "powerhouse" in the writing room. She can be the thinker where she sits back and all of a sudden has a burst of ideas, he said, or she can be extremely in the moment where she's throwing out ideas almost scatting over the music.

"She's very, very in touch with who she is as an artist and what she wants to say as a songwriter," he said.

Underwood put a different spin on the common phrase "something in the water." She said the song could have gone several ways, but she wanted to sing about baptismal water. She brought the idea into the songwriting session with DeStefano and he had the piece of music. Together, with the help of co-writer Brett James, they finished the song in short order.

It was one of the most heartfelt and deepest things of which DeStefano has ever been a part.

"I was fighting back the tears just listening to what we had that day," he said.

With the album launch nearly complete, Underwood is preparing to turn her attention to motherhood. She recently met with a tour bus company to talk about having a bus custom-built to accommodate her growing family. And she admitted that she's nervous and excited about impending motherhood.

Underwood said "like anyone would be in the situation" she wonders how a new baby will affect her career, but she's confident she and her husband "will make it work."

Baby Fisher wasn't planned, but the singer said she and her husband knew "it was around time" to start their family. They decided they would "just let God handle" when a pregnancy would happen, and she's pleased that when the news broke, her team was completely supportive.

Once the baby gets older, Underwood said "things will have to settle down as far as school and all of that" because the couple wants their son to have a normal life.

"We can't wait to meet the little guy," she said. "I was talking to Mike the other night and I was like, 'Do you love our baby?', and he was like, 'Of course.' And I said, 'Isn't it weird to think that you can love somebody you've never met?' The date is coming up … and it's a whole new chapter."

    Underwood tackles fashion

Carrie Underwood is about to add a new line to her already impressive resume. The multiplatinum-selling country singer, actress and awards show host is gearing up to launch clothing line Calia by Carrie Underwood. Calia is a fitness lifestyle apparel brand that will be sold exclusively through Dick's Sporting Goods starting in March.

"It's a fitness lifestyle brand, so you can drop your kids off at school and you look cute," Underwood said. "You run to the gym, you look cute. Throw on a sweater and scarf and you can go meet your girlfriend for coffee and get all the stuff done that you need to get done, and you don't have to change your clothes 10 times to do it. I'm excited to have all of the clothes."

She said the goal was to "bridge the gap" between unattractive, super technical workout clothes and clothes that are meant to wear but don't hold up in the gym.

"We really wanted to make something for everyone," she said. "There's things that are more bold and printy, and there's things that are more simple and great transition pieces. There's so many pieces that I'm like, 'I would wear that with jeans,' like cute sweaters and scarves. I just want women to feel good about themselves in any situation."

Really great article, thanks! I didn't know that Brad was such a supporter from the very beginning. He's so cool! I'm glad that it said that SOML is one of her most treasured memories. Carrie never talks about SOML, so I wasn't sure if all the negative comments had dampened her view of it.

Oh how I LOVE that part! Means she gonna bring the baby on tour either late next year or early Spring when she has released the BEST ALBUM of her career so far! With the writing she's been doing lately (I'm talking SITW, TBC, BA, and LTG) I am CERTAIN this next one is gonna be the ICE CREAM sundae!!!!!!!
