Rolling Stone: 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time

    56. Carrie Underwood, 'Before He Cheats' (2006)

This crossover smash emerged from circumstances as prefabricated as country music gets - written and produced by men whose credits include Lady Antebellum and Rascal Flatts, sung by an American Idol winner and sporting a literal-interpretation video. And yet the pop craft of "Before He Cheats," as rendered by Carrie Underwood in the key of frosty rage, is nearly perfect. Even a certified alt-country critical darling Kathleen Edwards is not immune to its seductive charms. "The rhythm of it, the metric of the lyrics, the chord changes, the play on words and unconventional patterns, the way she says 'Shania karaoke' - it's genius," Edwards said in 2009. "F***, I wish I'd written that!"

    We'll take it.
I still hear the pretention toward her in the writing, but I will take it none the less.....

I just wish after all these years, people who would wish to diminish her talent slightly would stop refering to her merely as "an american idol"..... Its intended to be a put down and Kelly is never refered to with the same attitude.

Carrie mentions Idol a lot but critics/writers seem to use it in a different way sometimes, you're right.

I would have had "He Stopped Loving Her Today" at # 1 but that is a really solid Top 10.

Yea, solid top 10, but I agree, HSLHT would be my number one. It was perfectly written, perfectly sung, and told a great story.

Sorry - but I wouldn't put much reliance on Rolling Stone telling me what was the 56th greatest Country song of all time.

Kathleen Edwards telling me what she thought amounted to genius in delivering a great Country song is another matter, though - I'd take that with respect.

Don't like the fact that there was only one Reba, George Strait and no Alan Jackson. "Coat of Many Colors" and "I Fall to Pieces" were too low. "Follow Your Arrow" being that high? Same with "Mean"?!?

Mean is crap. Otherwise, decent list. Yeah, they need to stop referring to her as American Idol winner. How about, 6 Time Grammy winner, hello!

Rolling Stone's list can never be mine because all my top 100 songs are my Idols' songs; besides, Before He Cheats is not my top Carrie song.

That's good to know Rolling Stone's list. Congratulations to Idol Carrie and Before He Cheats

I don't like that they keep using American Idol either. Grammy winner is much better.

Putting Mean at No. 24 is unacceptable to me. Having only a song at No. 56 and being far behind Taylor Swift, Idol Carrie seemed to strike them as a normal country singer

^ Johnny freakin' Cash was put behind Taylor too. That is just unacceptable, by anyone's standards. She is not even country! lol
