Carrie Underwood Writes New Song for ACM's Salute to the Troops

Carrie Underwood Writes New Song for Academy of Country Music's Salute to the Troops - Hollywood Reporter

Carrie Underwood Writes New Song for Academy of Country Music's Salute to the Troops

"Keep Us Safe" debuts Tuesday night on CBS; live digital single goes on sale tonight at midnight.

When Carrie Underwood was booked to perform on the CBS special, ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops, she told the producers she wanted to sing "See You Again," her 2013 single that would have provided an emotional touchstone to what was already going to be an emotionally-charged show. But Underwood had a plan – a secret plan.

"I wanted to write a song for this event," Underwood told The Hollywood Reporter. "I kept it to myself because you never know how things are going to turn out. If I told everybody I wanted to write a song and I had writer's block, that would be terrible.” The country superstar had no reason to worry.

"I had a writing date with some amazing songwriter friends of mine. I tossed out the idea that we should try and chase something for a few minutes and see if it snowballs and becomes something we love. We played around on guitar. I started mumbling gibberish and humming tunes. None of it made sense. If someone walked in and saw what we were doing it would have looked ridiculous. We started humming and the words popped out and the song really wrote itself. You just have to be able to make sense of it all and put it in some kind of order."

The result was a song titled "Keep Us Safe" and the producers quickly agreed this was the song Underwood should perform in the special. "I felt like we had something special and not just for this particular event," says Underwood. We wanted to keep it where whatever you're dealing with, it can make you feel better. I think we accomplished what we wanted to do."

When Underwood performed the song in a rehearsal for the ACM special, there were only a couple of hundred people in the MGM Grand Arena. It was a remarkable first for her. "It was the first time I sang it out loud, outside of our little writing area. The crowd was really responsive. They were loud. It was cool to debut it in front of a lot of people. Normally I sing a new song a thousand times in the studio before I go out and sing it in front of people. I was finding my own way through it, too."

The live version of "Keep Us Safe" will go on sale tonight at midnight on digital platforms. Proceeds from the single will go to the Academy of Country Music's charity arm, Lifting Lives.

"This song really makes me happy,” Underwood told THR. "It’s an overflow of emotion when you find a song that connects on a personal level. I get emotional on a lot of my songs."

What an incredible story! I will be purchasing this song from itunes, and also gifting several copies as well. The remarkable talent that Carrie has both as a writer and vocalist makes me so thrilled and proud that I follow her career. I could never ever imagined nor dreamed that when I first tuned in to American Idol so many years ago that she would become such a treasure. May God continue to bless you Carrie!

Thanks for posting the article Ann

Very interesting! I had assumed that the I-Tunes single would be a studio version of the song, but this indicates it will be the live version. I love the backstory.

I would love for the song to be on her album. It is so moving. But I'm guessing since it is a live version this makes the chances more slim. Who knows, though, anything is possible.

Thanks so much for posting. I like the story. I absolutely love the lyrics. I can only imagine she sounds heavenly. Carrie is such an incredible artist in writing but also a gifted interpreter as a singer. The thing I love about Carrie is she continues to grow as an artist and only gets better and better. She has such incredible and exciting career because of her hard work. I am going to buy it for sure.

Can't wait to buy this on iTunes. Carrie's voice on it is so beautiful.

I highly, highly doubt it will be on her album. I think it was just done especially for this event.

The live version is over at Pulse on Carrie's thread. Magical. Probably one of Carrie's best vocals. I'll be buying it tomorrow for sure.

Can't wait to buy this song. I have only seen the very fuzzy/not great quality video where you can't even really understand the lyrics, so I am really looking forward to hearing it on the show tonight. I don't think this will be on her album, but if it were to make it on there, I would hope it is more of the final track and doesn't take the place of another song we haven't heard yet. It's not secret that I'm not always a fan of the more inspirational ballads (although I do love JTTW, SS, and TH, I felt WOTW and WAY were out of place on her albums), so if she has to include them I prefer they be the closing track so they don't mess with the flow of the album (kinda like Change felt out of place on Play On).

I am so happy about this article.
Finally a moment where the focus becomes about Carrie creating music as an artist, and how that feels to her.

These kinds of articles are very important as she continues to develope as a writer, cause other artists like Taylor or Miranda are asked often about their writing process and rarely do you get a chance to hear Carrie talk about her part in the process.

As she spoke I am reminded of my own experiences in writing music and it is very much like what she said, sometimes a song just seems to write itself. IT just comes out as if it was always alive and waiting for a voice to bring it out of the dark.

I really love KUS because it embodies so much of who Carrie is.
If you don't like inspirational feel-good soul affirming music, Carrie may not be for you. This is truly who she is.
And KUS is a continued growth on her writing path.

I still say it is the best she has done so far......

(not that it is the best song she has ever sung. But that it is the best writing effort of hers that has flowered into a complete work. I am very happy for her, and I love that she loves the song so much. She should!! She should be very proud of herself, I hope she is.......)
