Great Sound of Music Review from UK

UKCountryMusic.net just posted their review of The Sound of Music

December 2013 saw one of the world’s best loved musicals come to life once again as Country megastar Carrie Underwood took on the iconic role of Maria Von Trapp in NBC’s live production of The Sound of Music. Contrary to popular belief, this was not a remake of the 1985 Julie Andrews film. This was an uber-ambitious, 100% live, broadcast of the original Broadway stage show.

For anyone who has ever heard Carrie sing, live or in the studio, it’s no mystery why she was Neil Meron and Craig Zadan (the producers’) first choice. Carrie has an effortless, powerhouse voice that most vocalists only dream of. This is instantaneously obvious when Carrie first appears to perform the production’s most recognisable track The Sound of Music. Surrounded by a stunning set made to resemble the forestry and hills of pre-World War ll Austria, it’s clear, this is no high-school production. This is big.

Throughout the show, Carrie holds her own against industry veterans and Tony award winners and Broadway veterans including Steven Moyer (as Captain Von Trapp), Audra McDonald (Mother Abbess), Laura Benanti (Zelda Schrader) and Christian Borle (Max Detweiler). Where many feared that Carrie would not be able to leave her Country twang behind-the-scenes to play the Austrian born and raised Maria, from the classics such as My Favourite Things right through to Something Good, it was clear that Carrie had been working tirelessly to lose her Oklahoma accent.
Its a little long to paste it all here, so the rest can be view here; Carrie Underwood Sound of Music Review

I guess this reviewer saw what I saw, a very good production of a Live musical play.

yet, the majority of the production’s highlights come in the form of carrie’s acts with the adorable von trapp children. her unique talent was showcased perfectly during the lonely goatherd. the charming scene saw carrie tap into her motherly instinct, as maria comforted the children during a thunderstorm. Incredibly, she simultaneously yodelled and sang whilst bouncing up and down on a bed as the children hid underneath, which of course, left the cast in visible fits of laughter.
    yes, yes, yes.

After rewatching the show a couple dozen times, I agree totally with the review. I would add that Carrie did show real emotion when it was part of the situation, stayed classly throughout, and displayed the charm we have all come to love.

It's really interesting that the Brits, who are known to absolutely skewer those who don't perform up to expectations, saw the beauty, talent and emotion that was evident to us all.
