Fan Friday: Why Carrie Underwood Makes The Perfect Modern-Day Maria Von Trapp

Welcome to Fan Friday, our new weekly series where we give fans a chance to speak out on the issues that matter to them. Today, Jason Scott speaks for the Care Bears.
How do you solve a problem like Carrie? You cast her in this year’s biggest TV event, that’s how. With the ever-so-talented Underwood taking on the iconic role as Maria Von Trapp in NBC’s live broadcast of “The Sound of Music,” skeptics have been shouting from the rooftops how much they hate this casting choice. I’m here to tell you how rather inspired it is and how there is not one other current superstar who could handle it.
Sure, Carrie’s background is steeped in making great country music (like her most recent chart-topper “See You Again”), but she also possesses a certain charm and grace not often found in Hollywood. Fresh-faced and down-to-earth, she embodies what the original 1959 Broadway play (and subsequent 1965 film starring Julie Andrews) is all about. Carrie’s entire life has been proving naysayers wrong. From her teenage years in trying to land a record deal to her stint as the golden warbler on American Idol to trying to breakthrough the barriers at country radio. She has overcome her fair share of adversity, stumbling along the way (anyone remember the lukewarm single “Mama’s Song”), but she has always (elegantly) landed on top. You know why? People love her.
People love what she stands for. Her singles—ranging from the spiritual anthems “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “Temporary Home” to the uptempo sing-alongs “Wasted” and “See You Again”—demonstrate her belief in living a better life, cherishing every single moment and passing that hope along to the next wayward traveler. She pulls no punches and sings from the heart. The character of Maria could very well be her fictional twin, separated at birth and misplaced in the annals of literary time.
Born and raised on a small farm in Checotah, Okla., Carrie comes from humble beginnings. Her family slaved away to make a living, teaching the promising starlet about what it means to work hard and provide for the family. Much like her upcoming role, she learned early on the importance of work ethic, knowledge and what that means for a bright future. In fact, she originally hadn’t planned to pursue a musical career outside of her early attempts as a teenager. Attending Northeastern State University, her sorority girls prodded Carrie to audition for Fox’s hit TV competition on a whim. Unbeknownst to her, this would become her best decision she ever made. While on the show, judge and producer Simon Cowell predicted that she would “not only win this show but you’ll sell more records than any other previous Idol winner.” And so it began. It was her small-town smile that immediately connected with the hearts of America, catapulting her to take the crown in 2005. She’s never looked back.
Also, who else could carry the demanding musical load the role demands? Taylor Swift? Michelle Williams? Nicole Kidman?
Note: The above video was snapped nearly six years ago at the Movies Rock event which premiered on CBS. Can you even imagine how Carrie would sound on that now?

That is cool but I wish this article didn't have names in the end. It's a way of dissing another artists and Carrie wouldn't want us doing that.
