He'll co-star opposite Carrie Underwood in the Dec. 5 special.

    HBO

True Blood's Stephen Moyer will co-star in NBC's The Sound of Music.
More to come but here's the press release below:
‘True Blood’ Star to Play Capt. Von Trapp Opposite Carrie Underwood in Dec. 5 Telecast
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Aug. 23, 2013 — Acclaimed British actor Stephen Moyer has been added to the cast of NBC’s Dec. 5 live holiday production of “The Sound of Music.”
Moyer will portray decorated World War I hero Capt. Georg Von Trapp, who is the single father of seven children. Living in Austria on the cusp of World War II, the militaristic but warm-hearted Von Trapp engages a young governess, Maria, who he hires to take care of his children.
Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum recording artist Carrie Underwood is set to star as Maria.
The three-hour production will be based on the original 1959 Broadway production of “The Sound of Music,” which starred Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. The play won the Tony Award as best musical and Martin won as best actress.
The 1965 film version starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and went on to win five Academy Awards, including best picture.
The music and lyrics for “The Sound of Music” were written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, respectively.
Moyer, a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, is best known to U.S. audiences for his role as Bill Compton in HBO’s “True Blood.” He has appeared on the series since it began in 2008 and was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the show’s ensemble.
Last month he starred in the Hollywood Bowl’s production of the iconic musical “Chicago,” where he played charismatic attorney Billy Flynn.
Moyer is a stage veteran in the U.K., having spent time with the National Theatre of Wales, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Oxford Stage Company and the Young Vic in England. He has played the lead role “Romeo and Juliet” as well as several other legit productions early in his career.
From NBC Studios, “The Sound of Music” is executive produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford will serve as directors.
Moyer is represented by WME in the U.S. and United Agents in the U.K. His manager is Lena Roklin.

I don't like True blood. I'm not thrilled about the casting honestly, but i'll get over it. Just excited to see Carrie staring in it.

True Blood is amazing!! He s an excellent respectactor with tons of theater experience and highly respected. He is also married to Anna Paquin an Oscar winner. I am very happy with this choice!

Broadway respects Steven for his theater experience so they just threw a nice bone to Broadway snobs. Also he is British so that will draw in lots of international fans.

give the guy a dang chance.

You do not need to like True Blood to like Steven. Google his theater experience. He is very experienced and respected in the theater world.

I never seen true blood not into vampires but based on the article he done musical theatre before, and has acting experience plus he practically went to school for this I mean why else would one go to London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Oh Tee, i'm going to give him a chance. Just wasn't jumping out of my seat thrilled at the casting news lol. Not a big deal. I watched True blood for the first two season and then quit. I can't judge him just based on that show alone though, that's not too fair. I haven't seen him in anything else. I'm sure it will all be wonderful )))

Also it is a huge plus that he is British. The show is airing worldwide so this will draw in international viewers.

He's a better singer then Richard Gere. The Captain is cast more for his acting than singing as the Captain only sings a few times in the entire show. Maria and the children do the majority of the singing in the show. Never watched True Blood so don't know much about him but seems like good casting.

Stephen is a great choice. He has theatre experience plus some name recognition from 'True Blood'. I've personally never seen 'True Blood', so I have no feelings about Stephen from that point of view.

Tee, please try to remember that people don't have to be thrilled over this casting. Just because someone doesn't like the casting at this moment doesn't mean they aren't giving him a chance. Different opinions make this board interesting (wink).

Well, I have never watched True Blood and don't know anything about this actor, but he looks dreamy. It sounds like he has a lot of experience on the stage, so that is good. Happily looking forward to Dec. 5th. Yean
