MSN Entertainment 2013 ACM Awards Predictions

FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR Nominees: Miranda Lambert | Martina McBride | Kacey Musgraves | Taylor Swift | Carrie Underwood
    Will win: Miranda Lambert
    Should win: Carrie Underwood
Martina McBride no longer has a record deal, and Kacey Musgraves will be considered by voters too new to win, which makes this a competition among the blond superstars: Lambert, Swift and Underwood. Lambert has won it for the last three years, and remains a favorite among voters with a total of five nominations this year, making her extremely likely to repeat. But while lots of different factors go into voters' choices, the word "vocalist" in the title would suggest the best singer should win here. Among this group of viable candidates, that would be Underwood.

    VIDEO OF THE YEAR
Nominees (there are six due to a tie): "Creepin'" Eric Church | "Merry Go 'Round" Kacey Musgraves | "Tornado" Little Big Town | "Wanted" Hunter Hayes | "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" Taylor Swift | "The Wind" Zac Brown Band
    Will win: Taylor Swift
    Should win: Eric Church
Swift and her team ramped up the creativity -- and difficulty level -- when they chose to shoot this entire video as one long tracking shot with no edits. The fun and clever result features a dance party, pajamas, people in fuzzy animal suits, Swift in glasses, and one very pissed off ex-boyfriend being shown the door. But Swift wasn't the only creative force in this category. Zac Brown Band enlisted Mike Judge ("Beavis & Butthead, "King of the Hill") to craft an action-packed animated video for "The Wind," and Eric Church and his band donned 1880s period costumes and even did a bit of acting in a clip that finds them on a mission to stop a runaway train.

    ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Nominees: | "Blown Away" Carrie Underwood | "Chief" Eric Church | "Red" Taylor Swift | "tailgates & tanlines" Luke Bryan | "Tornado" Little Big Town
    Will win: Taylor Swift
    Should win: Taylor Swift
There are album releases, and then there are Taylor Swift album releases, which typically take on the proportions of an event. Such was the case with last fall's "Red," which moved 1.21 million copies just in its first week of release alone, topped the iTunes album sales charts in 40 countries, and has remained a strong seller ever since. While she may lose some votes from those who consider the album more pop than country, it's impossible to criticize the positive attention the album's sales have brought back to the country format. If she wins, Swift will receive a second trophy here as a co-producer of the album. She has a total of five nominations this year.

    VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR
Nominees: The Band Perry | Eli Young Band | Lady Antebellum | Little Big Town | Zac Brown Band
    Will win: Little Big Town
    Should win: Little Big
Town It's been a long journey for Little Big Town to finally achieve the success the band is enjoying now, and ACM voters are likely to recognize that journey in bestowing this award on them in what is arguably the most competitive of the categories this year, with five very deserving nominees. A terrific new album and huge hit single ("Pontoon") will help Little Big Town's chances, too. Last year's vocal group winner was Lady Antebellum.

    NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Florida Georgia Line | Brantley Gilbert | Jana Kramer
    Will win: Brantley Gilbert
    Should win: Brantley Gilbert
All three of these nominees are already ACM winners this year, as they were the top vote getters in each of their respective, fan-voted categories: New Vocal Duo or Group, New Male Vocalist and New Female Vocalist. It's a strong group, as each act has topped the radio airplay charts in the last year and toured extensively. Kramer also holds the distinction of being the most played debut artist of 2012 at country radio. But it's her fiance, Brantley Gilbert, who is likely to win, having been on the national radar the longest and achieving the most success of the three to date. Still, we're betting he cast his vote for Kramer.

    VOCAL DUO OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Big & Rich | Florida Georgia Line | Love and Theft | Sugarland | Thompson Square
    Will win: Thompson Square
    Should win: Thompson Square
The weakest of the categories, this is also the easiest to predict, especially now that Sugarland is on hiatus. Florida Georgia Line and Love and Theft both had great years, and fans have already given the guys of FGL an early ACM win this year in the New Vocal Duo or Group category, where they beat both Love and Theft and Thompson Square. But this is an industry voted award, and music biz types will likely take into consideration that FGL is just a single and a half into its career. And since Thompson Square continued to achieve success with another huge hit this year ("If I Didn't Have You") they're likely to repeat last year's upset win in this category.

    ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Jason Aldean | Luke Bryan | Miranda Lambert | Blake Shelton | Taylor Swift
    Will win: Taylor Swift
    Should win: Jason Aldean
This award has historically been tied to live-performance achievements, and 2013 was the year Jason Aldean became a stadium headliner, selling out shows often in minutes, including taking Boston's Fenway Park clean in less than 10. Swift, too, is having a great run on the road, having just embarked on her "Red" arena tour. As an entertainer, she's pulled off some spectacular performances on other awards shows in recent months, and has been highly visible since she began promoting her new album last fall. The addition of fan voting in this category makes predicting a winner more volatile, and both stars have young, social-media-savvy fans eager to cast ballots. But Swift's army is likely to carry the day, giving her a third consecutive win in the category. Shelton, meanwhile, is a wild-card contender here thanks largely to his regular TV presence on NBC's "The Voice." He was named Entertainer of the Year at the competing CMA Awards last fall.

    MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Jason Aldean | Luke Bryan | Eric Church | Toby Keith | Blake Shelton
    Will win: Blake Shelton
    Should win: Blake Shelton
With a string of eight consecutive No. 1 singles, a new album, planned summer tour, ongoing role as a coach on hit NBC show "The Voice," and his returning role as ACM Award co-host, this trophy is Shelton's to lose, although Aldean, Bryan and this year's top ACM nominee, Church, will offer some stiff competition in the category. Shelton also won this award in 2012. Look for a repeat and, soon after, some slightly inebriated and lovably off-color quips from Shelton about how he pulled it off.

    SINGLE RECORD OF THE YEAR
Nominees: "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" Eli Young Band | "Over You" Miranda Lambert | "Pontoon" Little Big Town | "Springsteen" Eric Church | "Wanted" Hunter Hayes
    Will win: Little Big Town
    Should win: Little Big Town
While voters often use the Song of the Year award (see next slide) to reward more serious-minded works, they look at the Single of the Year category as an opportunity to sometimes recognize the fun, feel-good, earworm radio songs they can't get out of their heads. "Pontoon" fits that bill perfectly, with its tempo, its summer theme and its slightly naughty lyrics. Mmmmm … motorboatin'.

SONG OF THE YEAR [Award goes to Composer(s)/Publisher(s)/Artist(s)]
Nominees: "A Woman Like You" Lee Brice, Composers: Phil Barton, Johnny Bulford, Jon Stone | "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" Eli Young Band, Composers: Will Hoge, Eric Paslay | "Over You" Miranda Lambert, Composers: Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton | "Springsteen" Eric Church, Composers: Eric Church, Jeff Hyde, Ryan Tyndell | "Wanted" Hunter Hayes, Composers: Hunter Hayes, Troy Verges
    Will win: "Over You" (Lambert/Shelton)
Should win: "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" (Eli Young Band)
It was an emotional journey for married couple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton when they chose as songwriters to expose Shelton's feelings about the 1990 death of his brother when Shelton was a just teen. Shelton found the resulting song so raw that he couldn't record it himself, but Lambert's version made it a hit. It won Song of the Year at last fall's CMA Awards and is likely to repeat the win here. Pound for pound, however, "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" packs in just as much poignancy as it encourages listeners to follow their dreams at any cost.

    VOCAL EVENT OF THE YEAR
Nominees: "Don't Rush" Kelly Clarkson Featuring Vince Gill | "Easy" Rascal Flatts Featuring Natasha Bedingfield | "Feel Like A Rock Star" Kenny Chesney (Duet With Tim McGraw) | "Let It Rain" David Nail Featuring Sarah Buxton | "The Only Way I Know" Jason Aldean With Luke Bryan & Eric Church
    Will win: Aldean/Bryan/Church
    Should win: Aldean/Bryan/Church
In a perfect world, the best song would win out here, putting a trophy in the hands of David Nail and Sarah Buxton for the first time. But with all the superstars in this category, they don't stand a chance. Chesney and McGraw will make a strong showing, but their disposable song collaboration won't carry the day either. Rather, the trophy will go to the unstoppable pairing of three of the format's hottest current acts -- close pals Aldean (pictured), Bryan and Church -- on this fun cut from Aldean's "Night Train" album.

I like this part: "But while lots of different factors go into voters' choices, the word "vocalist" in the title would suggest the best singer should win here. Among this group of viable candidates, that would be Underwood."

She was nominated by the same voters who determine the winners, so if she wins it's their own fault.

Carrie should win both the vocalist and album - I don't think Taylor will win anything other than the Entertainer which is a joke category anyway- I'd love to see Jason win the entertainer - he deserves it but it's hard to beat Taylors POP hoards of voting 9 - 18 year olds- do they actually believe that people think Taylor is country??
