Richmond Times Dispatch - MUSIC REVIEW - Carrie Underwood

Music review: Carrie Underwood - Richmond Times Dispatch: Music

Carrie Underwood sang songs from each of her four albums at the Richmond Coliseum on Thursday.

When a group of local children sang, “I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive” at poolside karaoke a few years ago and parents looked on approvingly, the song’s artist had obviously reached a broad level of acceptance.

Those watching the fourth season of “American Idol” knew that Carrie Underwood had a blockbuster voice by the time she was crowned the winner, but few might have imagined that in less than 10 years, she would be the reigning queen of country music.

To open the show as part of her “Blown Away” tour, a short film of Underwood running from a cyclone gave way to the star emerging from a facsimile of a wind-blown house. Before a Richmond crowd that stretched to the Coliseum’s high walls, Underwood’s set was a jukebox of country hits. The night had a strong start, beginning with chart-toppers “Good Girl,” “Undo It” and “Wasted,” and the band providing a hard kick for “Last Name.”

Underwood’s key gifts — that powerhouse voice and her unimpeachable charm — held her audience rapt. She has kept a country focus throughout her career, although in concert it’s obvious how some songs easily crossed over to a wider audience. And pop divas could take a cue from their country counterpart in a live setting, where Underwood had no trouble driving the show without the use of stage-filling dancers. When you and your band can hop aboard a mini-stage and (with the help of some stout cables) fly across the Coliseum floor, who needs dancers?

The evening’s set list drew from each of Underwood’s four albums, and a late-show appearance from opener Hunter Hayes provoked a hearty roar from the crowd during “Leave Love Alone.” As the aforementioned karaoke kids were now old enough to buy their own tickets to see Underwood close the night’s main program with “Before He Cheats,” their “All-American Girl” was at the height of her powers.

The crowd treated each song in Hayes’ opening set like a fan favorite as he alternated between guitar and piano. The 21-year-old exuded a newbie’s anxious enthusiasm, although his early accomplishments as a musician and songwriter bode well for Hayes to grow for quite a while along with his audience.

How many people looked around at the band members before realizing it was Hayes himself playing that scorching guitar solo in “Somebody’s Heartbreak”? John Mayer, watch your back.

Pop diva, Take a lesson from Carrie, who can drive an audience without a stage full of dancers!!!

As the country industry crowns a pop diva again with their entertainer of the year, you have to wonder if they think to themselves, what if it were just her and a band on that stage?????

I took it to be a dig against pop divas using dancers. Good review regardless

A little slow, missed PK's comment, but I am gad the reviewer recognised that with Carrie she did not need dancers. Dancers are probably a distraction when someone is really giving it their all. Maybe the dancers help to distract when someone s lip synching.
