Behind-the-scenes: 4 things Carrie Underwood shares with Maria, ‘Sound of Music’

Excerpts from this in-depth article which contains lots of details on the life of the real Maria von Trapp.

Behind-the-scenes: 4 things Carrie Underwood shares with Maria, ‘Sound of Music’

Carrie Underwood shares four major characteristics with Maria von Trapp, the real-life inspiration for The Sound of Music, and it should be of no surprise that NBC chose Carrie Underwood to play the role of Maria von Trapp in NBC’s future live broadcast of The Sound of Music. According to the Los Angeles Times’ report from Nov. 30, 2012, NBC’s Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt commented in Friday’s news release that,

“Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp … She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”

    1. Carrie Underwood and Maria von Trapp: Two “iconic” women

Having become an “iconic” woman after a simple beginning is just one of the characteristics that Carrie Underwood and Maria von Trapp share. The real-life Maria von Trapp, who was the inspiration for the Maria in The Sound of Music, was born on Jan. 26, 1905, on a train heading from her parents' village in Tyrol to a hospital in Vienna. “Her anxious entrance into the world set in motion a life full of remarkable and challenging events that would be immortalized on stage and screen.” (Trapp Family)

When Maria Augusta von Trapp died on March 28, 1987 of heart failure in Morrisville, Vermont, little did she know that only 1,500 miles away was a four-year-old girl living on a farm who would once continue to immortalize her life on screen; Carrie Marie Underwood.

    2. Carrie Underwood and Maria von Trapp: The magic of the sound of music

For both Carrie Underwood and Maria von Trapp it was the “sound of music” that led them to the path of becoming an iconic woman. After winning the musical talent show American Idol, Carrie Underwood emerged as one of the most popular female performers in country music today. After winning American Idol’s fourth season, Carrie Underwood continued to win multiple Grammy and Academy of Country Music awards. She is also currently the youngest member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Like for Carrie Underwood, Maria von Trapp’s life was dramatically changed and became iconic because of music. Not only did Maria von Trapp teach her step-children the magic of music but (as depicted in the movie) it eventually became the family’s ticket to freedom away from the dangers of World War II.

    3. Carrie Underwood and Maria von Trapp: The impact of nature

In her biography, Carrie Underwood describes her childhood and close relationship not only with music but also with nature. "Growing up in the country, I enjoyed things like playing on dirt roads, climbing trees, catching little woodland creatures and, of course, singing." While Carrie Underwood points out that despite of having grown up on a farm, she has never milked a cow, it is still evident in Carrie Underwood’s smile, her voice, her songs, her being a vegan, and her openness to people that much of that force of nature is still very strong and present in her.

For Maria von Trapp, that same force of nature was her destiny. While being a nun at the convent in Salzburg, Austria, it was the absence of nature which led her doctor to recommend a transfer to the von Trapp’s family setting rather than spending too much time inside the convent.

    4. Carrie Underwood and Maria von Trapp: The foundation of faith

For most actresses, playing the role of Maria von Trapp would be an extreme challenge merely for the fact that faith is difficult to pretend. Carrie Underwood has shown more than once both in her songs and in her acceptance speeches that she has the kind of connection that makes it possible to portray Maria von Trapp’s religious faith. Interestingly though, while Maria von Trapp is depicted as a nun at the beginning of The Sound of Music, her relationship with God and faith was an arduous journey after the death of her mother at the age of two. According to the Trapp Family’s records, Maria von Trapp found her connection and destiny with God after one fated conversation with a priest.

For Carrie Underwood, going to Salzburg for NBC’s version of The Sound of Music would add one more common characteristic to the shared similarities between Carrie Underwood and Maria von Trapp; Carrie Underwood could be Salzburg’s future famous “Edelweiss.”
