Up And 'Away': Carrie Underwood Crowns Country Airplay Chart

Up And 'Away': Carrie Underwood Crowns Country Airplay Chart - Chart Beat | Billboard

Since Carrie Underwood first topped Billboard's radio-based country ranking nearly seven years ago, her contemporaries in the solo female artist category have grown accustomed to showing up with their game faces on. Still, none of those women have topped the chart nearly as many times since the Oklahoman, and 2005 "American Idol" champion, logged six weeks on top beginning the week of Jan. 21, 2006, with "Jesus, Take the Wheel."

This week, Underwood's No. 1 count rises to 13, as "Blown Away" (Arista Nashville) draws 39 million country radio impressions (up 5%) and steps 2-1 in its 18th week on Billboard's Nielsen BDS-powered Country Airplay chart. The song is the title cut and second airplay No. 1 from her fourth album; "Good Girl" reigned the week of June 16.

During her radio chart-topping span, Underwood boasts six more leaders than Taylor Swift (seven) and 10 more than third-place female soloist Miranda Lambert (three). Also notably, all but three of Underwood's 16 singles promoted to country radio have reached No. 1, with each of the trio to fall shy of the summit reaching No. 2: "Don't Forget to Remember Me" (2006); "I Told You So" (featuring Randy Travis; 2009); and "Mama's Song" (2011).

On Billboard's newly-revamped Country Songs chart - which blends all-format airplay, as monitored by BDS; sales, as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan; and streaming, according to BDS - "Blown Away" ranked at No. 3 last week, its placement backed by 48 million in all-format audience and 62,000 downloads sold. Check Billboard.com Thursday (Oct. 18) when Country Songs and all surveys (including Country Airplay) will be refreshed, as they are each week.

Top country audience contributors for "Blown" during the Oct. 8-14 BDS tracking week are KKGO Los Angeles (2 million impressions), WUSN Chicago (2 million) and WYCD Detroit (1 million). (In what can only help strengthen its Country Songs standing, the track is also bubbling under Pop Songs and Adult Pop Songs. Pop Songs panelist WXSS Milwaukee leads all crossover reporters with 106 plays for "Blown" last week; it and two other songs (Alex Clare's "Too Close" and fun.'s "Some Nights") rank as the station's most-played titles.)

'YEAH'!: Bookending the Country Airplay top 10, Tim McGraw inks his 47th top 10 with "Truck Yeah" (11-10), his first Big Machine single and the lead track from his first album for the label.

McGraw's 47 radio top 10s pushes him past George Strait for the most such hits dating to the former's first week in the top tier (March 26, 1994), when "Indian Outlaw" rose 14-9 on its way to a No. 8 peak.

Great article! Thank you for posting. I didn't see this and just posted the link in the Mediabase chart thread.

Anyway, I'm glad they focused on Carrie's obvious domination of radio in this article by including undeniable stats about her string of #1s.

With all the crap over thestupid new Billboard chart, this article made my day! Naturally, with the new configuation that only helps TS, she will top Carrie's record as soon as Red drops. It is BS and I am glad Rand B fans are as po'd as we are.

In a related note, I tried including the Country Airplay Chart on Carries Discography page but it keeps being undone by some editor named Aspects who seems to be on a power trip because when I reverse his edits I get warnings and a threat of being banned. No way should the Hot 100 Chart be the only US Country Chart included on her page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrie_Underwood_discography

If you are a registered Wiki editor and want to get involved in the discussion you can add your remarks here at the Carrie Underwood discography talk page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Carrie_Underwood_discography
A consensus needs to be achieved in order to have the changes stick.

Sounds like a coup has taken place = Billboard has taken over the chart world - do they own Wiki? They should include the BB Airplay chart , that's ridiculous - you mean non of her #1 's at radio can be recorded on Wiki? what does it say about Mama's song when it reached #2?

At least TS can't top Carrie's record for Country Airplay, especially once country stations start refusing to play her DUBSTEP crap. Seriously, I don't know how anyone can ever, ever call her "country" with a straight face and not realize how ridiculous it is so call her a country artist...
