Carrie Underwood's Blown Away goes platinum, but Kelly Clarkson's Stronger doesn't?

Carrie achievement makes her the first "American Idol" alumnus to have four albums reach platinum status!

There are probably a few people out there who are firmly in the Kelly Clarkson camp that are currently wondering how Clarkson's latest album, Stronger, has yet to be certified platinum while Carrie Underwood's latest, Blown Away, has -- even though Blown Away has recorded over 170,000 less units sold.

What? Yes, that is correct. To date, Clarkson's Stronger has sold 920,000 copies, as opposed to the 749,000 sold by Undewood's Blown Away.

But the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified Underwood's album platinum this past week, AmericanIdol.com reported. And although Stronger was certified gold in December, it has yet to be certified platinum. Even though it is a mere 80,000 copies away from the threshold.

Underwood's achievement makes her the first "American Idol" alumnus to have four albums reach platinum status.

For those that are involved in the whole Kelly vs. Carrie thing, the Kelly fans are undoubtedly frustrated and annoyed, while the Carrie fans are most likely ecstatic, and understandably so. But how is it that Underwood got certified platinum while her album is still a very comfortable more than a quarter million in sales away from the one million in sales plateau that albums have to achieve to get the award?

The RIAA certifies the album by units shipped (minus returns). They also have access to sales data from far more outlets than does Nielsen Soundscan, which is where most statistics for album sales are tracked. This means that an album's sales reported through Nielsen Soundscan isn't an actual count of units sold, simply because it does not incorporate all sales outlets. Of course, the RIAA method is also inexact, considering that sales may not be actual, either, due to the lag between shipments, sales, and returns of units shipped. However, of the two as regards units sold, the RIAA tracking is a more accurate system.

And that Carrie Underwood's Blown Away has been certified platinum indicates that the album has shipped and sold at least one million copies by the time it was issued its certification. At the same time, Clarkson's sales and shipments apparently have not reflected such sales as yet, despite being only a few tens of thousands short of the certification mark. It is also a testament to the strength of Underwood's history of sales. All three of her previous albums are certified multi-platinum (2 million or more in sales), with her first album continuing to sell well and having surpassed 7.2 million in sales to date. Clarkson's last album failed to go platinum, despite getting extremely close (over 940,000 units sold). In fact, her last two albums have failed to sell one million copies (the threshold), the sales appearing to all but dry up even though the albums include several hit songs each. My December, which was certified platinum, never reached 900,000 in actual sales, so the RIAA just might be biding its time until Stronger actually achieves the one million sales figure.

In the overall sales tally, although Clarkson reportedly has an edge in sales worldwide, Underwood leads in total album sales in the U. S. with nearly 13.4 million units sold to date against Clarkson's almost 11.7 million. And that includes Clarkson having one more album in the running than Underwood.

Blown Away returned to the Billboard 200 Top 10 this past week, according to Brian Mansfield at USA Today's "Idol Chatter," and climbed back into the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Country Albums chart, its sixth cumulative week there since being released in May.

Still, Clarkson doesn't play second to Underwood where singles are concerned (except on the country charts, of course, where Underwood has 12 No. 1 hits). In fact, the title track from the latest album, "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)," surpassed Underwood's biggest seller "Before He Cheats" in July to become the biggest selling single for an "American Idol" alumnus. Both songs continue to sell well, but "Stronger" has taken a commanding lead of nearly 150,000 copies. The Texas singer also has ten Top 10 Hot 100 singles, with three No. 1's to her name. Underwood has four and one, respectively.

As for Clarkson's Stronger album, the question remains: Will it go platinum? This past week, it only pulled in 5,000 in sales to get to 920,000. Still, those are strong numbers for an album that has been on the charts since late October 2011. It would appear that Stronger will most likely get its platinum certification in a matter of weeks.

Regardless, Kelly Clarkson is at work on her next album. According to Billboard, the songs for her next album -- her sixth -- are already recorded. They're just waiting for Stronger and its train of hit singles to slow down enough to prompt a release.

And Carrie Underwood? She's pushing for another No. 1 song on the country charts with "Blown Away," the title track to her album.

Both "American Idol" alums look to see their albums and singles sales increase in November after Underwood hosts the 46th Annual Country Music Awards. And adding fuel to the fire of a Kelly vs. Carrie competition will be that both women are up for the Female Vocalist of the Year award.

Proud to say that Carrie can still out sell Miranda and Kelly in a shorter time. Just another reason why those two are such good friends over Carrie.

    Congrats to Carrie!

Kelly's label has been rather slack in going after certifications for her since the My December era. They haven't even bothered to properly certify the single Stronger despite it selling over 3 million copies.

I didn't realize "better" was now only determined by sales . People are entitled to their own opinions. "Better" is subjective as I said earlier today to another poster.
It doesn't make Carrie any "better" than Kelly because Carrie sold more albums. Both women are incredibly talented and incredibly successful. I really don't see this need some people have to pit them against one another. They are two different genres and at different stages in their careers.
I don't see a reason to knock down one to build up the other. Both have accomplished so much, and are to be celebrated.

Why does it matter who is "most successful" in terms of sales? Both women have sold millions of albums over the years. I don't get why we need to label one has the "most successful".
Personally, I just enjoy both women and I am just thankful that they both continue to do well enough that they can still release music for me to enjoy.

Carrie FOCUS PRIMARILY on BEATING HERSELF. Success and beating competition ("IF", your PERSPECTIVE is - it is a COMPETITION.) - comes to Carrie NOT SO MUCH as the END GOAL, but as a RESIDUAL RESULT of relentlessly asking the question "How can I improve myself to do better tomorrow than I did today?" "Carrie and Mike-(According to Mike's book, Defender of Faith)" have asked this question day in and day out - as a disciplined way of life. No matter how much they achieve - no matter how far in front of their competition they pull - they NEVER THINK, they HAVE DONE "GOOD ENOUGH". Of course they want TO MAKE MONEY, BUT, they ALSO "ROOTED" their lives and LIVING ACCORDING TO "VALUES and PURPOSE"!!! They rise to GREATNESS because their families INSTILLED to BOTH of them the values of HARD WORK, HUMILITY, DIGNITY and DECENCY - with a RELENTLESS DRIVE FOR PROGRESS that impels "CHANGE and FORWARD MOVEMENT" "as" music market ENVIRONMENT CHANGES - in all that is NOT PART OF THEIR "VALUES and PURPOSE".

Doesn't the label have to request the certification or something like that?

I have to say the am really, really tired of this whole Kelly vs Carrie crap. First and foremost it has to be about the music. Why are here if it isn’t the music; because Carrie’s hot; she married Mile and he’s hot; you think Ace is the most adorable dog on the planet (which he isn’t, Gizmo is) or that you like her expressing her faith? It’s the music first plus whatever the rest is.

Carrie and Kelly are both amazing vocalist. Kelly can write TS under the table and Carrie is fast becoming a great songwriter herself. Both do what music is supposed to do, touch us deeply, allow our hearts to feel things are brains alone couldn't find the words for. One of my favorite quotes about music is Plato’s, who said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

I still cannot watch the JAD video without tears. My gut aches every time I watch the “Because of You” video (Kelley's not Reba’s) especially if you know the story behind the song. As a Christian TH gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. As someone who has Bipolar II disorder, Dark Side is deeply personal to me.

Comparing the two is just nonsense .They have different voice qualities and sing different genres .Carrie has a huge incredibly powerful voice built for country music, She is one of the best if not the best female country singer ever. Can she blow you away in other genres, sure. But if she were leave country she could easily move to rock. That is just as strong for her as country. Mellissa Etherege said in an interview after she heard BHC, that Carrie’s voice has the power and emotional push to be a great rock singer. I think all of have seen that when she sang with Steven Tyler at the CMT Crossover. Kelly on the other hand has the perfect clear voice for pop and soul. She is practically channeling Aretha Franklin in “The Trouble with Love”.

The whole Kelly vs. Carrie thing is media generated. Idol vs Idol is the media looking for drama because drama sells. Kelly fans say she is the original one true Idol and Carrie fans fire back. Falling into a cat fight that is just what the media want. They are BOTH the best Idol in what they do. As country fans we should behave better than this or we could go hip hop where one artist’s fans try kill a rival artist.

I encourage you to not fall for this comparison; it’s contrived, meaningless, and hurtful. Ok I’m getting off my soap box now.

I agree that Kelly is a great artist and a I nice person. I have no issue with her whatsoever except for her undeserved Female Vocalist nom, and I think in her heart she must know she didn't earn it either. She even tweeted it. lol But I disagree with her team even submitting her name.

Anyway-- I think it is important to note that most Carrrie fans seem to like Kelly Clarkson generally and do not trash her as most of us respect her vocal ability. (Taylor is a different story- lol). But sadly I do see alot of negative comments directed at Carrie from Kelly's fans, all the time.

So there is a rivalry, but I think it is more on Kelly's fans' part. I hate when articles try to pit them against each other too as they are in different genres with different styles of music and singing.

I'm not making drama. I don't post to create drama...I post to state my opinion. Yes, this can be fun, but it is tiresome for some of us to see the women constantly put up against each other when each of them is so great.
I'm glad you think this whole comparison thing is fun. I don't.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. They are both fantastic artists in their own right. It is so unfair to both of them to compare them. One will always be more successful than the other; what's the point in comparing them? To quote Carrie: "Success? That's if, at the end of the day, you are truly happy with your life. It isn't measured in dollars or accomplishments." I think both terrific artists, at the end of the day, are beyond happy with themselves. And that's the important thing.
