ALBUM REVIEW: CARRIE UNDERWOOD, 'BLOWN AWAY' - The Daily

Don’t let Carrie Underwood’s sheen of pretty fool you into thinking her music is so.

“Blown Away,” her excellent new album out tomorrow, is filled with complicated emotions and dark imagery that boldly diverge from the smiling, lip-glossy, saturated blonde of Underwood’s “American Idol”-borne image.

The title track of “Blown Away” concerns a girl who was abused by her father (exactly how is left to deep listening and the interpretation of which “sins” Underwood might be singing about). When a tornado rips through their Oklahoma town, the girl heads for the basement, leaving her drunk father asleep on the couch. “Some people called it taking shelter / She called it sweet revenge,” growls Underwood, before the hostile chorus: “Shatter every window / till it’s all blown away / … / Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away.”

The tracks it’s sandwiched between aren’t much sunnier. Despite punchy instrumentals, “Good Girl,” the album’s first single, warns against a bad boy: “He’s no good, girl / No good for you.” And “Two Black Cadillacs” is about two women — a wife and a mistress — who barely keep up with the grief charade during the funeral for the man they shared, whom everyone else thought was a good person.

The bleakness throughout “Blown Away” wasn’t engineered by some Nashville songwriting cabal of sadness — Underwood co-wrote most of her songs here, and nearly all of the better ones. An exception is “Blown Away” itself, a standout written by Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear, who also wrote “Before He Cheats” on Underwood’s first album. There are similarities between the two songs, namely the moaning, pissed-off urgency in Underwood’s vocals, and of course righteous violence. (“A Louisville Slugger to both headlights” is surely in the top 10 of memorably threatening country lyrics.)

The one potential hit you’d expect just a little more from is “Good in Goodbye,” which gets an assist from Ryan Tedder, the songwriter who notoriously made two separate hits for Beyoncé and Kelly Clarkson with one piece of music (“Halo” and “Already Gone,” respectively).

Lest the bum-out tracks make you think you’ll need a tumbler of good whiskey before listening to “Blown Away,” self-medicate not. Even the sad ones are still objectively wonderful songs, and the smattering of happy tunes are finely wrought and emotionally complex.

“Do You Think About Me” has the joyful lovey-dovey strains of Faith Hill’s “This Kiss.” Right after it comes “Forever Changed,” a sweet circle-of-life story that waxes poetic on the joy of pregnancy. “She remembered the changes in her body / the blooming within,” it goes, before the “she” becomes an old woman, and the singer is revealed to be her grown daughter. (Underwood has said that the song, written by Tom Douglas, James T. Slater and Hillary Lindsey, reminds her of her grandmother’s death.)

Underwood told Billboard that “I really do think there’s something for everyone” on “Blown Away,” her fourth album and first in over two years. She’s done herself proud. There’s the dependable pop, predictable but strong country, some heart-breakers and some love-makers. And there’s this audacious but tight new Underwood for those who ever questioned where she is headed or what she is capable of: everywhere, and anything.

Wow, this reviewer's use of prose sometimes made me wonder whether she liked it or not for a while there. By the final paragraph you can definitely tell that in spite of the gloom in the picture telling stories of Blown Away and Two Black Cadilacs she loved the album

    Amazing the diverity of reviews.
It really does seem that it is more about what the reveiws take into the listening of this album.
Cause the ones that like it seem to like and appriciate Carrie anyway. And the ones that don't like it seem convinced that Carrie can't do well in the first place.
Face it folks. Some are just never going to accept Carries abilitites for what they are.
And they just judge the fact that country critics don't like pop, and pop critics don't like country so what are you left with???
    Very lopsided reivews.

Yay, this is a good review. I liked it. I'm happy to see more positive ones. I agree with this part:

She’s done herself proud. There’s the dependable pop, predictable but strong country, some heart-breakers and some love-makers. And there’s this audacious but tight new Underwood for those who ever questioned where she is headed or what she is capable of: everywhere, and anything.
    Thank you for posting, Ann055.
