OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood Song Would Make a Better Idol Exit

OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood Song Would Make a Better Idol Exit
March 4, 2011; Written by Alison Bonaguro

I'm all for classic Scottish rock songs and good covers of them. But why would American Idol choose season seven winner David Cook doing an old Simple Minds song, "Don't You (Forget About Me)," to sing for the contestants' farewell, when Carrie Underwood's "Don't Forget to Remember Me" would have been perfect? Even if Cook was the one singing it, Underwood's sentiments about "I still feel like I'm where I'm supposed to be" and "Lord, I feel so small sometimes in this big ol' place" would have softened the blow to the contestants who are leaving the show. Her lyrics would send the message that Idol and America will not forget to remember you. And it's a lot more current and relevant and very well known. That Simple Minds song is 25 years old. Most of the contestants haven't even been alive that long. What do you think about the exit song choice?

I'm fine with the current exit song; Carrie already had one with HSH a couple of seasons ago anyway lol. And I don't really want DFTRM to be used as an exit song for AI lol.

Yeah, I agree. DFTRM was really about going away to college, and being away from home...I just don't think it would be good exit song material, in my opinion. I loved Home Sweet Home...

^^Exactly. "Tell my baby sister I'll see her in the fall. And tell Mi-ma that I miss her. Yeah, I should give her a call. And make sure you tell daddy that I'm still his little girl..." Not exactly the GREATEST choice for an exit song for Idol.
Carrie's "Play On" would be amazing.

However, I'm very pleased with David's.

I love David, so I'm happy for him getting the boot song this year. I agree with others that DFTRM doesn't exactly fit lyrically for the occasion. Plus, we got to hear Carrie every week when she did Home Sweet Home...it's good to see Idol spreading the love to other Idols who need promo .

I think Dont Forget to Remember Me would be a good choice, they don't have to use the parts that show its specifically for colleges. But Play On would be good too.

I am with everyone else on DFTRM not really being a good Idol vote off song.

Cook's version of "Don't You" is pretty good. "Bad Day" is still the best vote off song AI has had.

    I commented.
    Yes, it would be great.
Cook singing it would have been perfect.
Don't You Forget About Me feels too dated.

I wish Carrie would be doing the exit song but if you remember she did one seasonI think 2 years ago I can't remember so i did not think they would use her again so soon. But PO would be good.

Carrie already sang an exit song in 2009 with a cover of "Home Sweet Home"

Carrie just sang the exit song last season, so I couldn't see Idol using her songs for two years in a row.

I think it's great they chose David's song; he could probably use the boost. Plus, him & Carrie are close friends, which is cool.

As far as using DFTRM, I actually think using it as the exit song could be a great move. The chorus of the song would be a prefect fit.
They only use a small snippet for the show anyway; I believe they did that with "Bad Day,' & "Home Sweet Home.
Plus, it's one of Carrie's most underrated songs; I would love to see it get a major boost in exposure.

I think whoever wrote that was pretty biased towards DFTRM specifically haha. I appreciate their enthusiasm, but to say DFTRM is more well known than Don't You Forget About Me is rubbish. Even if the contestants were born after it was first released doesn't mean they've never heard it. I was born after it was released and though I never knew who sang it or its exact title, I've heard it around tons of places and I would say most people have at least heard it before as well.
