Checotah native and ‘American Idol’ winner packs the house at BOK Center

TULSA — Under the clear Tulsa skyline, an army of fans from ages 6 to 60 marched to the box office at the BOK Center like ants bringing food to their queen.

And Wednesday night their queen was Checotah’s Carrie Underwood, the 2005 winner of TV’s “American Idol” and numerous music and video awards.

Underwood’s Carnival Ride tour with special guests, Little Big Town, nearly packed the center.

Underwood, a Northeastern State University graduate, said in a recent telephone interview, she thinks of this tour as “milk and cookies” since the performers are family oriented. And so are the fans.

Parents brought their young children, and grown children brought their parents to a show geared for family.

Sisters Jenny and Shelby Johnson of Tulsa said they never miss an opportunity to see a country show.

“I have been a fan of Carrie since she released ‘Some Hearts,’” she said. “I think it’s awesome she is finally home.”

Underwood felt the same way.

After a video countdown on a megatron screen brought her fans to their feet, she rose out of the stage to a roaring crowd.

“It’s great to be home,” she said to the audience. “It’s been way too long.”

Underwood, dressed in a purple fringed spaghetti strap dress with black tights, and thigh-high boots, looked very casual and relaxed as she opened with “Head on the Floor,” bringing the crowd to a frenzy.

The audience felt the anticipation. With the rumble in their feet, she told them to relax and get ready for a good time.

“I want everyone to sing along, dance and stomp your feet,” she said. “We’re here to have fun.”

When she began her hit, “All-American Girl,” she walked down BOK’s catwalk and slapped the hands of fans.


“I am really glad I wore shorts under this dress,” she said and laughed.

During the song, she stopped to speak to the audience.

“This is where I bring someone on stage to help me finish this song,” she said.

The crowd went wild with hope, until she said she already had someone ready — her 5-year-old cousin, Skyler.

The little girl, who wore pigtails with a straw cowboy hat and red boots, was a little shy on stage but quickly told her cousin, “No,” when Underwood asked if she could borrow her hat and boots.

“Can you believe she told me no?” Underwood asked the crowd.

Then she finished the song on her knees singing to Skyler winking as she said, “sweet, lovable, beautiful all-American girl.”

Little Big Town got the crowd ready for Underwood as they finished with their hit, “Life in a Northern Town.”

The crowd resembled a wheat field as they waved their arms, like a breeze caught their hands and kept them high.

Earlier Underwood said she picks her songs like any other fan of music would.

“I listen as a fan,” she said. “I listen to things and I write things that I would want to hear if I were still back home listening.”

Underwood said no matter what, she still calls Oklahoma home.

“I live and work in Nashville,” she said. “But Oklahoma will always be my home.”

Well, this person had a couple things wrong, LOL. It is not HEAD ON THE FLOOR, ROFL, and LBT ended with that Boondocks song and not Life in a Northern Town but great review other then that. So funny with these reviewers don't know the name of Carrie's songs.

I just got back from this concert and had a great time and Carrie sounded great....Carrie also brought her baby nephew on stage too during TMBIM instead of a boy from the crowd. But she started laughing at the end and gave him back b/c he started crying on stage. I'm too tired to post a review or videos up today but I try to sometime tomorrow or on Friday as I have a busy work schedule tomorrow....or I should say today.

And as mentioned in my review under the TULSA REVIEW thread, she used her 5 yr old cousin for AAG. She too did not look like she wanted to be up there, LOL, but she did not cry.

I didn't get to go this year. But last night my mom told me there will be other times where I will get to see her in Concert again and meet her someday!!! I've been praying really hard about it!!!
