    That's quite an ambitious choice of song to cover.
    I think Carrie's version consolidated what, to quite a degree, has come to seen as her signature sound. I see that in two aspects - firstly, the way the music begins with quite traditional themes, using mandolin and resophonic steel guitar, to complement a relatively simple, punctuated beat, but later becomes more progressive in style, with greater use of keyboard and electric guitars, to emphasize the increasing emotion as the song builds up to a climax
    - and secondly, the way Carrie's vocal moves with the music, to encompass the two styles of delivery that she's best known for: the traditional Country intonation that she emphasizes in the verse and narration parts of the song,; and the soaring power vocals that she uses to express the peak of emotion in her choruses and finale.
    Those two aspects recur in many of her best known songs - but they do tend to make a track particularly "delivery driven" - i.e. making its impact and memorable quality particularly dependent on the performer and the way she imposes her own talents and musical understanding on her interpretation of the potential in the theme on the song. And it is that that makes a version more important than just the lyrics and melody of the song itself.
    In short, I think that does make it a difficult song to cover - but I'd be very interested in how Ty develops his own version, and I admire him for choosing it.

    ^^the first link actually is his version of the song and it’s quite nice. Tone is lovely and almost lullaby-ish while you can tell which parts of the song have the most meaning to him just in separation of the phrasing. Very pleasant.

    Thanks for that tip - I hadn't noticed that there was a link to the actual song (another example of my too late at night confusion!).

    Ty keeps much of the progression in styles that I mentioned in my post - but, at the same time, makes his version personal to him. I think it was successful - and his singing would be a welcome addition to radio.

    People have covered So Small on talent shows and I've never been able to like their renditions. I think the mistake that they made was they tried to duplicate what Carrie did on the song instead of adapting it to their style and vocals. I like Ty's version because the music is balanced which goes with his vocals, and it feels like he has command over the song rather than the other way round. I hope this song brings him more success and attention. It will definitely be a crowd-pleaser at his concerts.

    His music video and voice just elevated my opinion of the song even more than I imagined it could. What a beautiful portrait it made on my soul.

    Your description is beautiful. Amazing how the simplicity of the video (and his wonderful voice) conveys the message so vividly. Love it. Hope it is a massive hit for him.

    Just an aside - but does anyone know if Carrie has spoken publicly about this version? I have a feeling she would like it, and appreciate it being given a new airing.

    Copying Maddkat's post to this thread:

    @carrieunderwood
    When artists write & sing songs, we hope people will be able to relate to them...to find themselves in the lyrics. When another ARTIST relates so much that they want to sing it, too, it makes the song mean even more! I this, ⁦@TyHerndoncom⁩ !!! music.apple.com/us/album/so-sm…
