Basing a musician's award on studio recording only benefits session players, and seems to give no credit to live performance. Quite often, a touring band who perform live a couple of hundred times a year won't play on the studio album - the producer will call in guest musicians to back the vocalist just for that one recording. I guess it may suit the Nashville system - but I can't see the IBMA doing it that way.
