    Hillary Lindsey

Hillary gave a half hour radio show, with songs (including "Jesus, Take the Wheel") interspersed with interviews yesterday.

She explained her early days singing with the 4H Clover group, with Jennifer Nettles, how she did get offered a recording deal, but wanted to concentrate on writing, how she was signed to a publishing deal while still a student at Belmont, spent time writing in New York and Los Angeles, where the publishers paid for hotels, as well as Nashville, and how she got her first number one with Martina McBride This is a more or less verbatim transcription of the part where she talked about Carrie:

"I was with Famous Music for 6 years and decided to go independent. I don't spend a whole lot of money, but I do have a business manager to help me. I'd saved enough money and decided to give myself a year to try to do it. In that year, I had seven cuts with Faith Hill, one with Tim McGraw, one with Lee Ann Womack and two others - but then, bam - none of them stuck, except the Lee Ann Womack cut - none of the others made the record. So I was struggling, nearly at the end of that year.
Dad always remembers me calling him up and saying "I think Carrie Underwood's going tol win American Idol, I swear. Please God, if she does, I just want one song on her record, just one
So, she won, and they had a little writers round, where she came out and listened to some of us. We were out at a farm somewhere, about 45 minutes out of town. That was the day we met, and she just sort of gravitated to my voice and some of my songs.
"Jesus, Take The Wheel" changed many lives, including hers and totally mine.
The second record, she decided she wanted to co-write, and Luke Laird and I were I think her first. We just gelled, and it was really such fun in the room. And she's an amazing lyricist. At first, she was really kind of shy about it, because she'd never really done it before - just like me back in the day when they asked me to co-write with some guy, and I didn't like the experience.
And from then I'm so thankful and so blest that she calls me and continues to write"

    Are there any videos/etc?

I definitely want to write this up, just want to get the quotes right.

Thank you. Carrie is so modest; she very rarely 'toots her own horn', so to speak. Nice that Hillary does!

That's so sweet Hillary has so much respect for Carrie, and that she pointed out how humble she is about her talent.

Hillary is probably my favorite songwriter in country music, so I love that Carrie has continued to work with her.

very nice! Tx! That is why I feel Carrie is a very under-rated songwriter: She is shy and doesn't take alot of credit, where others do. So it is nice for her cowriters like Hillary to give Carrie the credit she deserves.

In the second half of the podcast, they played the A Little Bit Stronger Demo (written by Lindsey and Lady A's Hillary) sung by Lady A with Hillary as lead. (note: I've seen her FC live version but the demo is her finest performance) I was pleasantly surprised by how strong her voice was; she sung it with so much flavor, dynamic, and emotion. So unlike the weaker, and mellowed out Sarah Evan's version. I wish they had kept the song because it was perfect for Hillary (again, listen to the demo. great solid vocal- so much potential); could have been a huge hit for them.

You guys should really listen to the whole podcast. It was quite fascinating hearing about her background, the rise of her career along with backstories about the songs they've written, and original demos.

ETA: If anyone has or knows how/where to get the download for the demo, pleaase let me know. Thanks!
