Clive was in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation where both sides are right if the event should have went on or not.

The people who went and paid tribute to Whitney felt they were doing the right thing just as those who didn't go because they thought it wasn't the right thing to do are right, personally there isn't a chance in hell that I would have went considering the circumstances.

No one really should get criticize one way or the other if they attended or not. It is a tragic death but it was determined by her mentor and family for the gala to go on. Of course there were times of tears and laughter as common at any wake of sorts. I imagine many people in attendance felt uneasy but also there were reasons they were there.
I agree. I don't believe that Whitney's body couldn't be removed because of the party. It's not like they were going to carry her out the front door. I'm sure she was taken out a back exit to ensure the utmost privacy and respect. There is a lot of protocol that has to be followed when someone passes away in a location other than a hospital. The police would have had to clear the scene, the crime lab was shown to be there and they would have made sure to do everything by the book, plus the coroner would have their job to do. As Jim said, in a case as high profile as this, everyone would make sure everything was being done exactly as it should be. No one wants to be accused of doing something wrong later on.

Clive Davis was definitely there and he did the opening speech. He and Alicia Keys skipped the red carpet. This is a report I read...

    Hours after
    Whitney Houston's death
last night (Feb. 11) at the Beverly Hilton, an emotional
    Clive Davis
-- the troubled singer's longtime mentor, producer and friend -- arrived at that very hotel to preside over his annual pre-Grammy Awards gala. After
    embracing Alicia Keys
outside, the industry legend headed inside and offered a heartfelt tribute to the talent he helped nurture.
"I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me," Davis said, according to the AP. "She was full of life, looking forward for tonight. She loved music and she loved this night that celebrated music."
"Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare," he added. "She graced this stage ... so many times. So simply put: Whitney would have wanted the music to go on."
Keys honored Houston by singing a line from her hit "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and thinking back on how she'd been inspired by the R&B diva.
"You think about how this person touched you," Keys said. "[Then] you form a friendship, a sisterhood, a bond. You see how incredible they really are ... She was a sister to me."

This seems to be Clive Davis speech. He states Whitney family asked him to move on with the party. There are other speech at the link as well. It's worth reading what Tony Bennett and Alicia Keys said.

    Clive Davis:
So. By now, sadly, you’ve all learned of the unspeakably tragic news of our beloved Whitney’s passing. I don’t have to mask my emotions. Not in front of this room, so full of so many dear friends. I do have a very heavy heart and I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me for so many years. Whitney was so full of life. She was so looking forward to tonight. She was not at all scheduled to perform. She loved music and she loved this night that celebrates music. My heart goes out to her daughter Bobbi Krisitina, to her mother Cissy, to all of the relatives, to so many of you here tonight…her extended family who loved and cherished her and cherished her spirit. Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage with her regal presence so many times, giving so many performances here over the years. So simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on. And her family asked me to carry on. I ask you now to join me in this moment of silence as we dedicate this evening to Whitney. Now ladies and gentlemen, let the music begin.

Clive asked the family of Whitney Houston what they wanted him to do-- and they wanted the show to go on. So I don't think he should be blamed.

But I do think the fact that the body was in the same hotel is creepy-- and for that reason-- it should have been cancelled so the police can do their work in peace.

agree. They had to do a full inventory of the room and "crime scene", etc-- interview witnesses in the rooms next door, etc.

Some music execs who were directly above Whitney's room told CNN they heard a few loud thumps not long before the EMTs arrived. It could have been Whitney falling, or someone breaking down the bathroom door-- since she was in the bathtub apparently.

They are saying she took Xanax, legally-- but obviously it is unclear if she od'd or not.

Creepy as it may be, the party happening at the hotel was in no way interfering with the police's work IMO. The police would have been on another floor completely. It is a large hotel. I'm sure the party was quite a distance from where the body was located.
Whitney's family wanted the party to continue as planned, and it did.

Well, I'm sure Bobby Brown is not most people favorite and probably not be use to consider the right protocol on things like this, however he went ahead and performed last night in Memphis. Sounded like he had difficulty at intervals but made it through his set. Drugs tortured both him and Whitney. I have not heard if he is clean now, hopefully he is for his daughter.

Wow, I am still somewhat in shock of her death, it seems surreal! The music industry truly lost an icon and a voice that will stand the test of time. My condolences goes out to Whitney's daughter and family.

I was trying not to say much about this but I think some of you people are very judgmental for no reason. I respect the people that went to the tribute and those who didn't. Everyone handles death differently and there is NO RIGHT WAY! (Personally, I would of opted out as it seemed to soon, which it was!). The whole debate on wether Clive should of canceled the party or not is silly. You just can't cancel an event that was arranged months in advance, there are many formalities and procedures which we don't know the of. With that said, I respected his decisions because in the Entertainment industry "THE SHOW MUST GO ON!" They did a tribute on a short notice and I give them much respect.

I love and respect Carrie for her decision.

    Rest in peace Whitney!

It was sad to hear of Whitney Houston's passing. She had an incredible gift. It's a shame she lost her way.

I read that Carrie (and Taylor Swift) were both too upset to attend Clive Davis' Pre-Grammy party. Very sad indeed. R.I.P
