Live Performance Elimination - Round One, Group Three

Sorry that this is a little late starting.
Thanks for voting for the second group everyone! I Told You So, Alone (IHeart), Songs Like This and Change will all be moving to round two.

    Here's how things will work:

I've posted a poll with round one, group three. I've decided to divide this first round into a few groups because the board won't allow a poll with 34 options haha. I'll post the match-ups below and you will vote for one out of each match in the poll. I will keep track of which songs win each match, and when we've worked our way through all the first round songs, we'll start round two with the winners from round one. We will keep working our way through the rounds until we have our final showdown and the ultimate winner. Please pay attention to the matches when voting.

You have until Tuesday night to vote.

    Round One, Group Three:

I'll Stand By You (Idol) vs. Desperado (Grammys)

Blown Away/TBC (Grammys) vs. Before He Cheats (Grammys)

Fix You (VH1) vs. So Small (Songwriter’s Special)

Undo It (CMT) vs. Sin Wagon (Idol)

Blown Away (Grammys) for sure. A friend told me that Carrie's Blown Away album will be on sale at Target on black Friday for $5.00. Going to pick more up to send to the troops as Carrie is the most requested artist for them.

Please make sure you actually take the time to vote in the poll this time in addition to just posting your choices. I made sure to make the poll multiple option this time, so you should be able to select a choice for each match.

Haha it will all be okay, opry! I thought we'd get some of the difficult decisions out of the way first.

I only voted on two of these matches (I couldn't find a video for Before He Cheats at the Grammys, and I could only find audio for Fix It on VH1 - and didn't think it would be fair to base a performance elimination on that alone).

On the two I did vote for:
It might be a safe guess that I'm never going to vote against Desperado, lol - but this is really a great, sensitive interpretation, where she finds the right raw ache in her voice that the song needs. One of the writers (I can't remember off hand whether it was Don Henley or Glenn Frey) said that he really understood the song better when he heard this version. What I love about some of Carrie's classic covers is that she finds little ways to bring out new touches of meaning - e.g at around 2.15, when she drops to that lost note of resigned realization when she sings "funny how the feeling goes away". That, and the ending, show a level of understanding that leave no doubt about her artistry

In the final pairing, I think she gave a spirited performance on "Undo It", showing skill in "working" an audience. However, the performance as a whole was rather overlaid by a lot of extraneous video backdrops, which rather competed with what Carrie herself was doing. On the other hand, "Sin Wagon" was pure Carrie, with no frills, and showed her ability to command a stage to perfection. That gets my vote, and I'll repeat what I said about this performance in the first trial of this game: "Carrie shows a side of her live performance here that's often rather missed in her more elaborately staged showcases. She comes across as feisty, and her stage movements and facial expressions bring out the spirit of the song. I agree with the judges' comments that this style suits her best - it's a shame, in my view, that her Sony work doesn't go more in this direction."
