This is a little different than your favorite Carrie playlist. I'm sure this has been done before but I still hope people will respond. The question is: If 5 songs had been released as singles from each album what do you think would have been the best songs to release and in what order? I know that we all have our favorites so this is not necessarily about favorites but about what you think would have been the wisest choices for Carrie's singles' catalog and in furthering her career in whatever way you think it should go (some people want her to be more conservative country and be firmly established as such, some want her to have cross-over appeal to other formats, etc.) The only restriction is that the songs must come from her albums.
Here is my list:
Some Hearts:
Jesus, Take The Wheel
Don't Forget To Remember Me
Before He Cheats
Wasted
The Night Before (Life Goes On)
Carnival Ride:
All American Girl
Just A Dream
Last Name
Flat On The Floor
I Told You So
Play On:
Cowboy Casanova
Someday When I Stop Loving You
Undo It
Temporary Home
Songs Like This
Note: As you can see, I am pretty happy with the singles that she did release. I really considered how the songs sold and the airplay data I see on Idolchatter every week. Sometimes I had to ignore those though b/c I thought a song was worthy even when it did not go to number 1 on Billboard for example DFTRM and ITYS. I do see on the Idol Airplay that there is a trend toward playing Carrie's more upbeat songs. I am a sucker for her ballads although I love the upbeat songs as well but I took that trend into consideration. This was a particular problem for me on Carnival Ride b/c I love Flat on the Floor and I know You Won't but I finally decided on Flat on the Floor. Similarly, on Play On I love What Can I Say but then I saw the totally unsolicited airplay that Songs Like This got for quite some time.
As always, this is just my humble opinion and I would love to read yours Carrie fans!
ive kinda always thought about this! lol here is mine
Some Hearts
Jesus Take the Wheel (I dont think anyone would argue against that)
Wasted
Before He Cheats
Dont Forget to Remember Me
Young and Beautiful
Carnival Ride (not much changed in mine as i though they did a good job with singles)
Get Out Of This Town
So Small
All American Girl
Last Name
I Told You So
Play On
Cowboy Casanova
Someday When I Stop Loving You
Undo It
Quitter/This Time (Both would be good choices and I go back and forth between them)
What Can I Say
****As you said this is what i think would have been best overall. Some of these songs are not on my list of favorites
I too have been happy with the majority of singles Carrie's team has released, but if I had chosen the singles, I'd probably pick them based on quality, instead of choosing them based on how personal they are to Carrie & such.
I appreciate that Carrie feels so strongly about her audience getting to know her through her music, but I also think some of those choices have somewhat diminished the general public's view of Carrie's choices as an artist.
I've noticed that a lot of country fans who don't own her albums or dig deeper into her albums think she's just a boring girl who sings the same type of songs. I hear people make comments all the time about how she has a pretty voice, but bad taste in album material.
Obviously, Carrie's loyal fans would disagree with this, but I really wish Carrie's team would take risks with some singles & release the stronger material, instead of going by the book. I feel like the process the label has used to pick singles paints Carrie into a corner she doesn't deserve to be in.
Anyway, here are my picks from each album:
Some Hearts:
1." Jesus, Take The Wheel"
2. "Wasted"
3. "The Night Before (Life Goes On)"
4. "Before He Cheats"
5. "That's Where It Is"
Carnival Ride:
1. "So Small"
2. "Get Out Of This Town"
3. "Flat On The Floor"
4. "Just A Dream"
5. "You Won't Find This"
Play On:
1. "Cowboy Casanova"
2. "This Time"
3. "What Can I Say"
4. "Someday When I Stop Loving You"
I agree, I loved the majority of her singles but some of the singles, such as MS, were of a lower quality but were released because they related to Carrie's life. Other times, the best songs weren't released (especially with PO). I really hope they get the singles right this time around and choose the songs of the highest quality, or maybe they could take fans opinions into account
But anyways now my single choices
Some Hearts:
1: Jesus Take the Wheel
2: The Night Before (Life Goes On)
3: Before He Cheats
4: Wasted
5: Starts With Goodbye
Carnival Ride (This one is hard to narrow it down, so many great single possibilities I definitely think LN and SS should be released too but there just wasn't enough room)
1: Get Out of This Town
2: Just A Dream
3: I Know You Won't
4: All-American Girl
5: Flat on the Floor
Play On:
1: Cowboy Casanova
2: Someday When I Stop Loving You
3: Undo It
4: Quitter
5: What Can I Say
Okay, here are mine:
Some Hearts:
Jesus, Take the Wheel
Don't Forget to Remember Me
Before He Cheats
Wasted
The Night Before (Life Goes On)
Carnival Ride:
So Small
All-American Girl
Last Name
Just A Dream
I Told You So
Play On:
Cowboy Casanova
Temporary Home
Undo It or Songs Like This (Either would've been fine by me...Undo It is catchier, and the music video showed off the Play On Tour in a great way, in my opinion.)
Mama's Song
Play On
Some Hearts:
1. "Jesus, Take The Wheel";
2. "Wasted";
3. "Some Hearts";
4. "Before He Cheats";
5. "Starts With Goodbye".
Carnival Ride:
1. "Just A Dream";
2. "All-American Girl";
3. "Last Name";
4. "You Won't Find This";
5. "Crazy Dreams".
Play On:
1. "Cowboy Casanova";
2. "Play On";
3. "Undo It";
4. "Temporary Home";
5. "Songs Like This".
Some Hearts
1. Jesus, Take The Wheel
2. That's Where It Is
3. The Night Before (Life Goes On)
4. Before He Cheats
5. Wasted
But I'd be a little afraid of Carrie songs starting to sound the same. The order was really difficult.
Carnival Ride (although this was the best era single-selection-wise)
1. Get Out Of This Town
2. So Small
3. All-American Girl
4. Last Name
5. You Won't Find This
Although JAD was a FANTASTIC selection, this would've been fun, too, I think.
Play On (the one that needs the most improvement)
1. Cowboy Casanova. It was the perfect lead single. Best decision by the label ever.
2. Someday When I Stop Loving You
3. Undo It
4. Quitter
5. What Can I Say?
Seems like the singles that Carrie's team has chosen to release has been pretty strong throughout Some Heart and Carnival Ride. Some Hearts released the best string of singles that helped the public know who Carrie was as an artist and advanced her build in the country community.
Carnival Ride also released some of the strongest songs and diverse mix, I feel. So Small (inspirational), All American Girl (happy mid-upbeat song), Last Name (boy bashing), Just A Dream (mellow ballad), I Told You So (traditional country classic).
In my opinion, most of the songs on Carnival Ride were on par to each other in terms of quality so they really could have gone either way with choosing the singles (like going to GOTT and FOTF instead of a similar sounding song like LN <-- prequel to BHC)
Looking at the past singles in those eras, I'm pretty content with the choices made.
Singles chosen in Play On era definitely had me wishing for different choses though.
It had some of the most AMAAAZING songs on the album(which showed and shined well on who Carrie was as writer and artist) and yet just settled for much less, which was a pity.
"Mama's Song" was, I believe the only single Carrie ever chosen because of personal connections (coinciding with her own personal life).
anyways, I still have good faith that Carrie will chose amazing songs on her next album next era. crossing my fingers for her team choosing the singles.
okay now, MY personal choices!

For me, the singles from the SH era were all awesome, so I won't change a thing on that era, except I'd probably want Young and Beautiful to be relased before closing the era. It's a fun, youthful song that I've enjoyed listening to.

I'm surprised by the lack of WCIS. Oh, well. To each his own.
But I'm more surprised by how lots of people are leaving off the fifth single. Weren't we just b!tching about how Carrie wasn't getting a fifth single a few months ago?
