I should be more careful in wording. Yes, I ought not to steryotype and mash all muslims together; note that on my article, I did not isolate Islam, but always paired it with words, "Extremist," "Facist," etc. Muslims in the US for example want to follow our customs and conform to our morality. Imams, most of them, will distance themselves from Extremist.

However, in muslim lands, it is not unusual for women to be second class citizens unless they are in a more, western arabic country. In lands where Wahabiism is strong, medieval rule remained and unchanged. In Saudi Arabia, most recently, it came under fire for imprisoning a woman after she claimed that a group of men raped her (1)!

It is argued by many muslim scholars and apologist the Koran honor women treating them equally, and denounce Jihad claiming that the word simply means, "Struggle". However, the Koran isn't very clear; in fact, some passages does appear to call for Jihad and sactioned the beating of women. Lets take women for example:

4.34": Men are the *maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and *beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great. - Woman (2)

Today, Arabic media water down the wife beating perception in the west but there are clips of wife beatings that even an Iranian female journalist acknowlaged after her research but dismiss them as Western and Zionist Propaganda (3)

When it comes to Jihad, it can be argued that the Extremist took the Koran out of context. To be fair, one former muslim turned Christian said that the Koran doesn't necesarily teach Jihad but it isn't clear either. I've looked at some of the verses myself and saw that the Koran doesn't clearly teach Jihad, it gives a premise that if the believer is attacked and oppressed, fight them but adds, until they submit to Allah (4).

2:216 fighting is ordained for you, even though it be hateful to you; but it may well be that you hate a thing the while it is good for you, and it may well be that you love a thing the while it is bad for you: and God knows, whereas you do not know. [201]

002:190-191: [2.190] And fight in the way of Allah with those who fight with you, and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits. [2.191] And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers.

009:029: Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.
