CW Working On 'Smallville' Style Series With Batman's Robin

The CW has given the greenlight for a pilot episode of 'The Graysons', a 'Smallville' style series that will center around Batman's sidekick, Robin.

'Smallville' executive producers Kelly Souders, Brian Peterson and 'Supernatural' executive producer McG, are behind the planned series, reports Variety.

'The Graysons' will follow Dick 'DJ' Grayson's life before he becomes Robin and aligns himself with Batman. According to the paper, the 'Graysons' will tell the story of a young DJ as he faces "challenges involving first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up."

In the original Batman mythology, Dick Grayson was an 8-year-old acrobat, and the youngest of a family act called the 'Flying Graysons', when a gangster named Boss Zucco killed his parents, by sabotaging their trapeze equipment. It was then, Batman took Robin under his wing and trained him to fight crime.

The 'Smallville' producers are said to have come up with an original take on the character, which will no doubt be necessary since it's not easy to make a series on a superhero who doesn't have any powers, and especially one who's best known for being a sidekick.

The CW is probably eyeing the series as a potential replacement for 'Smallville', should it end its run this year or next.
