Winfrey's Mom Countersues Store For Its $156K Bill
MILWAUKEE - Oprah Winfrey's mother says she shouldn't have to pay a nearly $156,000 debt to a high-end fashion store because store officials shouldn't have extended credit to her.
Valentina Inc. alleges that Vernita Lee of Milwaukee racked up $155,547 in purchases and interest as of July 1. The company sued, saying Lee fell behind in minimum monthly payments of $2,000.
Lee filed a counterclaim Friday contending that Valentina took advantage of her "lack of knowledge, ability, and-or capacity" when creating her credit account.
Court papers say Lee resolved a 2002 case with the company over a $175,000 bill. The resolution prohibited Valentina from extending further credit to her.
A message left for Valentina co-owner Tony Chirchirillo was not returned Tuesday.

That's the most ludicrous defense I've ever heard. It's pretty sad that people can't take responsibility for their own actions.
I'll bet she wasn't thinking that they "took advantage of her lack of knowledge, ability, and-or capacity" when she went on the $156,000 shopping spree.
As wierd as this sounds, it might happen. She'll win the lawsuit the same way a gambler wins in Vegas when the casino knows full well that the person is addicted to gambling, and they take his money anyway. The courts have ruled that gambling addition is a desease and if the casino knowingly accepts the addicted person's wagering, they're in jeopardy. In this case, they had previously settled with the store and they had agree not to extend her credit limit. They did. Now, she might not be addicted persay, so the point might just be moot. Wierd but true.
Man do you know what I could do w/ that amount of money? Nothing I'll save it for my future and maybe just buy my basic needs. Who needs to do that amount of shopping anyways. Wish I was that rich to get to blow that kind of money. No Store would give me that much credit. I'll be lucky if I got 500 dollar credit
