Russian Lawmakers Look To Ban 'South Park' For 'Extremist Activity
Russian lawmakers are looking to ban 'South Park', calling the series 'extremist' after an episode recently broadcast in the country.
The satirical animated cartoon has always courted controversy since its 1997 debut but investigators in Russia have filed a motion after deciding the 'Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics' episode broadcast on Moscow station 2x2 "bore signs of extremist activity."
In the episode, Adolf Hitler and Mr. Hankey, the Christmas poo, perform in a Christmas variety show featuring unusual holiday songs.
"It offends the honor and dignity of Christians and Muslims alike," Moscow prosecutors said in a statement. "It could just have easily included Jews, Scientologists, Catholics, Mormons and Moonies all of whom have been mercilessly targeted by American series."
The Russian Union of Christians of Evangelical Faith has asked prosecutors to ban 'South Park', saying: "It is just one of many cartoons that need to be banned from open broadcast as it insults the feelings of religious believers and incites religious and national hatred."
"It's one thing if they are on cable TV and viewers pay money and make a conscious choice. But young children should not be able to turn on the TV after school and watch this. They need to be defended."
The prosecutors agreed that the programme "could provoke ethnic conflict and spark inter-religious hatred", issued a warning to the station that airs the show and sent the case to court.
