McCain running mate's unwed teen daughter is pregnant

ST. PAUL, Minn. — John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said today that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, an announcement aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's.

A statement released by the campaign said that Bristol Palin will keep her baby and marry the child's father. Bristol Palin is five months pregnant, and the baby is due in late December.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," they added.

Sarah Palin's son Trig was born in April with Down syndrome. Internet bloggers have been suggesting that the child was actually born to Bristol Palin but that her mother, the Alaska governor, claimed to be the mother.

McCain adviser Mark Salter said the campaign announced the daughter's pregnancy to rebut those rumors.

Senior McCain advisers said the Arizona senator and his top aides had known about Bristol's pregnancy before offering Palin the No. 2 spot on the GOP ticket.

"Senator McCain's view is this is a private family matter. As parents, (the Palins) love their daughter unconditionally and are going to support their daughter," said McCain spokesman Steve Schmidt.

Said Schmidt: "Life happens."

Good timing announcing this, right in the middle of a hurricane. Let's see how O'Rielly and Rush spin this one.

Personally, I don't care if her daughter got pregnant, it happens. But, if this were to have happened to Obama's 17 year old daughter, if he had one, we wouldn't hear the end of it. The republicans would set aside a whole day at the convention for this issue. "Family values". "Abstinence programs work". "We are the party of moral values". Of course, all this would be blanketed by flags on both sides and everyone wearing a flag pin. Pictures of families celebrating the 4th of July would be in the background. Pictures of babies in maternity wards after being delivered to the married parents would highlight the plasma screen tvs in all their glory. blah, blah, blah.

I hope she does get married to the father and they lead a great life. The problem is not that Sara's daughter is having a baby, it's that the mother is not qualified to be vice president. McCain is 72 years old, we have two wars going on at the moment, an economy that's very fragile, an education system that really needs repair, etc. Would you feel comfortable with Sarah Palin as your president if something were to happen to McCain? I wouldn't.

Personally, I wouldv'e preferred he pick Mitt Romney, but that's just me.

Not qualified?? Maybe you should do your homework on this one, jp. Google her.....all the info is there. Don't judge a book by it's cover. She is the only one of the 4 in this race that has executive experience (running a government).

Would I feel comfortable?? I'd trust her with my life!

As for the daughter....it happens to the best of us (me included). At least she is allowing that baby to live. Says a lot for her, in my opinion.

Forgive our parents' sins... don't overly punish our children's transgressions.
I honestly don't know why people care if her daughter is pregnant or not. It's her life - let her do whatever she wants. She's marrying the young guy and they have the support of their families. END OT THE STORY.
Besides, FYI, Obama's mother gave birth to him at 18. So yeah, I don't see him using the pregnancy thing anytime soon.
Besides, McCain has been captured and tortured for 5 years. He has come out victorious over 2 cancers so far and his mother is still alive.
HE IS GONNA LIVE. STOP saying he will die.
Even so, I'd take an older president over a young one who only knows how to preach and talk. Sarah Palin (nbr 2 on the republican ticket) has MORE experience needed to be president than Obama (nbr 1 on the Democratic ticket). A president's job is an executive job... and she has WAAAAY more experience than Obama in that area. Foreign affairs? mmm that's what the Secretary of State is for... anyway, when McCain/Palin get elected, she'll learn and we won't see the best of her until the debate with Biden... Let's wait till October and then bash her.

I don't think this should have anything to do with the election. It was her daughter's choice, and it doesn't affect how McCain will be pres. I hope the media doesn't spin this into a debate about the morals of the candidates. They should just let it be.

I totally agree.

...Sadly, though, personal issues do play a part in elections.

I agree that it is not fair to judge her just because her teen daughter got pregnant. These days-- that is the norm anyway. lol

At least she is getting married to the father- so there is no scandel, really.

Like I said, the pregnant part doesn't bother me at all. It happens to the best of families.
The "not qualified" part is just my opinion. I respect yours also. It's all good.
Trust her with your life? That's going a little overboard don't ya think.

Sorry but I don't trust any of the candidates from both parties. It's just a matter of who I don't trust the least at this point.

There are allegations from a guy named Larry Sinclair that Obama is bisexual and did drugs in the past. Check youtube if you don't believe me. So it works both ways about looking at these candidates past history and getting dirt about them.
